Trenton Devils News Release
Elmira, NY - After allowing four-consecutive goals to fall behind 4-2, Ryan Ginand and J.S. Berube tallied markers in the opening 8:19 of the third period to lead Trenton to a 5-4 victory Friday night at First Arena. Mike Brown preserved the win in goal, stopping all 14 Elmira shots in the third period to earn his third win of the season.
After dropping their third consecutive decision this season to Elmira Wednesday night at Sun National Bank Center, the Devils raced out to the early advantage Friday with Ryan Ginand making the score 1-0 off a feed by Chase Watson, 10:00 into the first period. Matt Vokes then made the score 2-0 50 seconds later when his centering feed glanced off a Jackal's skate and behind goalie Marco Cousineau, with Ryan Hayes and J.S. Berube earning helpers.
The Jackals' third-ranked offense responded quickly, with Eric Regan scoring 36 seconds after the Devils had taken the 2-0 edge. Besides cutting Trenton's lead to 2-1, Regan's fifth goal of the season changed the game's momentum with Yannick Tifu, Andrew Sweetland and A.J. Perry following with three more goals to stake Elmira to its own two-goal advantage, 4-2, 6:52 into the second period.
Facing their fourth loss this season after leading 2-0, the Devils' comeback was started when the Ryans, Ginand and Hayes, collaborated on a play at 9:30 of the second period to cut Elmira's lead to 4-3, seconds after a Devils power play expired. Though a product of sustained power-play pressure, Hayes' seventh of the season was an even-strength goal, and Ginand picked up his team-leading 13th assist.
Ginand expanded his team-lead in goals by scoring his ninth of the season 12 seconds into the final frame to knot the score, 4-4, after Cousineau left a large portion of the net unguarded after being tricked by a carom off the boards. With the ebb and flow back on Trenton's side, J.S. Berube scored the eventual-game winning goal with 11:41 remaining in the third period on a wraparound, his second game-winner in the last two weeks.
In the final four minutes, the Devils killed off the Jackals' sixth power play and survived the last minute with the goaltender on the bench for a sixth attacker. Mike Brown saved his best two saves of the night for the final 30 seconds, covering a loose puck in the crease and making a point-blank save at the buzzer, securing Trenton's first win over Elmira since April 2 of last season.
The Devils improve to 9-11-0-1 by snapping their three-game losing streak while Elmira falls to 12-6-5-0. After splitting the first two meetings this week, the Devils and Jackals will meet in the rubber game of their three-game series Saturday night at First Arena at 7: 35 p.m.
