December 10, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
Brian Swanson scored a key, third period goal, and then converted the only successful shootout attempt, to lead the Alaska Aces past the Victoria Salmon Kings 3-2 on Thursday night at the Sullivan Arena. The Aces improved to 12-9-1 on the year. Three of their four wins at home this season have come post-regulation. The Aces will now have a rare weekend off before hosting the Stockton Thunder next Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. The Salmon Kings scored the first goal of the game just 10 seconds into the contest. Victoria jumped on a turnover inside the Aces zone and Rick Cleaver scored from the high slot to make it 1-0. The Aces had several power play chances in the first, and outshot Victoria 21-7 in the period, but could not find the equalizing goal. The Aces thought they had tied the game, but a Wes Goldie goal was disallowed after the referee lost sight of the puck and blew the play dead.
Alaska eventually broke through in the second when Chad Anderson cut down the slot and deflected an Ethan Cox pass into the net at 12:21 to tie the score. It remained 1-1 deep into the third period.
The Aces took their first lead of the night when Brian Swanson scored on his own rebound at 15:31 to make it 2-1 Alaska. But the Kings came back late in the game. On a power play, Victoria pulled their goaltender for a two-man advantage, and Milan Gajic scored on a one-timer from the left circle with 16.2 seconds left to force overtime.
After a scoreless OT, the first nine shooters all were denied, setting the stage for Swanson to end the game as the tenth and final shooter.
Gerald Coleman (8-7-1) made 21 saves on 23 shots, and stopped all five shooters in the shootout for the win. David Shantz (6-8-3) took the OT loss with 40 saves on 42 shots, while stopping four of five shootout attempts. The Aces power play went 0-7, while the Salmon Kings went 1-5. The Aces outshot the Salmon Kings 42-23 in the game.
The Aces will now have a rare weekend off before hosting the Stockton Thunder next Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. For more information, please call the Aces at 907.258.ACES or visit them online at www.alaskaaces.com.
