
Trenton walks off again with 4-3 over Connecticut

(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton Designated hitter Austin Jackson connected on the game-winning RBI single in the ninth inning to lift the Thunder to a 4-3 win over Connecticut on Saturday night. Trenton had it second consecutive walk-off win over Connecticut, and its sixth this season at Waterfront Park.
With the game tied at 3-3 in the ninth inning, Third baseman Chris Malec led off with a walk against Connecticut reliever Steve Palazzolo (5-5). Malec was lifted for pinch-runner Colin Curtis at first base. Curtis advanced to third base on a double by Right Fielder Edwar Gonzalez. Palazzolo was then lifted for Connecticut reliever Brooks McNiven. McNiven intentionally walked Center fielder James Cooper to load the bases with no outs. But, McNiven retired Second baseman Reegie Corona on a fielder's choice, and Shortstop Ramiro Pena on a line-out, to put himself on the cusp of getting out of the jam. However, Jackson came up next and delivered the game-winning RBI single.
Connecticut jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Trenton Starting pitcher George Kontos. With one out and a runner at first base, Third baseman Simon Klink connected on a two-run home run. Connecticut made it 3-0 in the second inning, on a solo home run by Left fielder Olmo Rosario. Trenton cut the Defenders lead to 3-1 in the third inning on an RBI double by Pena. In the fourth inning, the Thunder tied the game at 3-3. Left fielder Kevin Russo started the frame with a single off of Connecticut Starting pitcher Ben Snyder. First baseman P.J. Pilittere followed by reaching on an infield single, to put runners at first and second base with no outs. Snyder retired Malec and Gonzalez for the first two outs, but allowed an RBI single by Cooper to cut the lead to 3-2. Corona then tied the game with an RBI single.
Thunder reliever Jhonny Nunez (1-0) picked up the win in relief of Kontos. He allowed two hits and struck out four in 2 2/3 shutout innings. With two runners in scoring position for Connecticut and no outs in the ninth inning, he struck out the side, to keep the game tied at 3-3. Kontos scattered 10 hits and three runs in 6 1/3 innings. Snyder also received a no-decision as he allowed 10 hits and three runs in six innings. Trenton had five players with multi-hit games in the win.
Trenton and Connecticut play the third game of the four-game series on Sunday night. Game time is set for 6:05 p.m. Jason Jones (13-6, 2.86) will start for the Thunder against Connecticut RHP Dave McKae (7-9, 4.54).
