New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Portland, ME- Jared Gothreaux worked five shutout innings and Daryl Harang matched a franchise record by making his 58th appearance, but the Portland Sea Dogs blanked the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 7-0, behind eight masterful innings from right-hander Clay Buchholz on Saturday night at Hadlock Field.
Portland (74-64) snapped a 0-0 tie with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tony Granadillo (3-for-4, 3B, 2 R) led off with an infield single off Harang. Following a single by Mickey Hall (1-for-2, 2 BB, 2 R) that put runners on the corners, Seth Overbey entered and yielded a two-run triple to Argenis Diaz (2-for-5, 3B, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R). After a pair of walks -one intentional- loaded the bases, Lars Anderson (1-for-2, 3 BB, 2 RBI) made it 3-0 with an RBI single.
The Sea Dogs put the game out of reach with four runs against Zach Dials in the bottom of the eighth inning. Granadillo tripled to lead off, Hall walked and Diaz doubled to right field, giving Portland a 4-0 lead. Aaron Bates (3-for-4, RBI, BB) added a run-scoring single, Anderson walked with the bases loaded to force in a run and Mark Wagner (0-for-3, SF, BB, RBI) capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly off Edward Rodriguez.
New Hampshire (59-81) threatened in the top of the fourth inning when Eric Nielsen (1-for-4, 2B) doubled and advanced to third base on Gothreaux's sacrifice bunt. Gothreaux made history by becoming the first Fisher Cats' pitcher to ever step to the plate following a lineup card mishap forced New Hampshire to remove designated hitter Brian Dopirak. Buchholz ended the scoring threat by striking out J.P. Arencibia to end the inning.
Nielsen's fourth-inning double was the last hit the Fisher Cats would manage. Buchholz (1-0) pitched two-hit ball over eight innings with 10 strikeouts and one walk to earn the win.
Mike James closed it out with a scoreless ninth.
Gothreaux pitched five scoreless innings, scattering four hits and fanning one in his longest career Fisher Cats' outing.
Harang (4-6), who tied Jesse Carlson's record for most appearances in a single season for the Fisher Cats, suffered the loss by allowing two runs on two hits in one-third of an inning.
With the victory, Portland clinches at least a one-game playoff with the Binghamton Mets for the Northern Division Wild Card after the Mets fell to the New Britain Rock Cats, 7-1, on Saturday night.
The Fisher Cats look to prevent the Sea Dogs from clinching their fourth straight post-season berth when right-hander Brandon Magee (6-13, 4.85) takes the mound against Sea Dogs' right-hander Ryne Lawson (1-1, 4.15) at 1:20pm on Sunday afternoon. Radio coverage begins at 1:05pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.
