'Dogs win their second straight over the 'Cats

(Portland, ME)- Clay Buchholz (1-0) fired eight shutout innings and Portland (74-64) scored all seven runs over two innings, thrashing the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, (59-81) 7-0, Saturday night at Hadlock Field. With the victory, the Sea Dogs can clinch their fourth straight playoff spot on Sunday afternoon due to Binghamton's loss at New Britain.

Buchholz retired the final 10 batters faced and fanned 10 over eight frames. The righty allowed two hits on a single by Erik Kratz and a double by Eric Nielson. Buchholz's lone walk came to Kratz in the fifth.

Mike James closed out the game with a perfect ninth and hasn't allowed a run in eight straight outings.

Portland could not score off starter Jared Gothreaux, who worked five scoreless innings on four hits, two walks and a strikeout. The Sea Dogs scored all seven runs against New Hampshire's bullpen on 8 hits and 7 walks.

In the seventh inning, Tony Granadillo reached on an infield single and Mickey Hall singled off losing pitcher Daryl Harang (4-6). Argenis Diaz greeted Seth Overbey with a 2-run triple for the game's first runs. After Jorge Jimenez struck out, Zach Daeges and Aaron Bates walked, Lars Anderson laced a run-scoring single.

Portland scored four times in the eighth inning off Zach Dials. Granadillo led off with a triple and scored on a double by Diaz. Bates added a run-scoring single and Anderson walked with the bases loaded.
