
Trenton takes second straight over New Britain

(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton Starting Pitcher Ivan Nova hurled seven solid innings to help lead the Thunder past New Britain 6-3 on Friday night from Waterfront Park. The Thunder have won two straight over New Britain.
With the game tied 2-2 in the sixth inning, Trenton (8-5) scored three runs to take a 5-2 lead. Trenton Outfielder Colin Curtis led off the frame with a single, and moved to second base on a single by Outfielder James Cooper. After a ground out by Trenton Designated Hitter Jorge Vazquez, Third baseman Marcos Vechionacci singled to right field scoring Curtis to give the Thunder a 3-2 lead. The lead increased to 4-2 on an RBI ground out by Catcher Francisco Cervelli. First baseman Chris Malec followed with a two-out RBI double to plate the final run of the frame to make it 5-2. New Britain Reliever Jose Lugo (0-1) allowed the three runs in the sixth inning to take the loss.
The Thunder took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a solo home run by Cervelli off of New Britain Starting pitcher Cole DeVries. The home run was Cervelli's second of the season. New Britain (4-10) scored two runs in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. New Britain Danny Valencia had an RBI triple in the inning. Valencia finished the game 3 x 4 with a double, triple, two RBI and a run. Trenton tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI ground out by Shortstop Eduardo Nunez.
Nova (2-0) went seven innings to pick up his second win in two starts. He yielded eight hits and two runs. Nova struck out six and walked only two. Thunder Reliver Jose Valdez pitched a scoreless ninth inning to notch his fourth save in four opportunities. New Britain Starting Pitcher Cole Devries received a no-decision. He yielded three hits and two runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Trenton and New Britain play the third game of the four-game series on Saturday night. RHP Ryan Pope (1-0, 2.38) will start for Trenton against New Britain RHP Matthew Fox (0-1, 6.97). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
