Connecticut Defenders News Release

PORTLAND, ME- A game time temperature of 62 degrees provided the first ideal day for baseball for the young 2009 season but Connecticut couldn't take advantage as they fell 3-1 to the Portland Sea Dogs Friday night.

The Sea Dogs received a solid outing from their starter, LHP-Felix Doubrant who silenced the Defenders bats all game long and watched his offense deliver three runs off of eight hits as Portland took game 2 of 4 to even the series at one game apiece.

Connecticut took an early 1-0 lead right out of the gates as LF-Bobby Felmy scored on a DH-Andy D'Alessio sacrifice fly to left in the first inning.

The Sea Dogs would wait until the second inning to respond when RF-Bubba Bell sent a two run homerun over the left centerfield wall to give his team a 2-1 lead. It was Bell's second homerun in the series.

Portland tacked on another run in the fifth with a 1B-Lars Anderson double to the gap that plated CF-Josh Reddick who walked to leadoff the inning. That would drive Defenders starter, RHP-Daryl Maday (0-1) from the game trailing 3-1. Maday would turn in only 4.1 innings of work, allowing three earned runs off of six hits, walked one and struck out three in route to his first loss of the season.

The Defenders had their best chance to at least tie the game in the eighth inning when they had runners on the corners with one out but a 5-4-3 inning ending double play shutdown any hopes.

Doubrant (2-0) picked up the win for Portland as he checked in five innings of two hit ball allowing just one run, while walking a pair and striking out a season high eight. Reliever RHP-Bryce Cox (0-1) locked in his first save of the year, giving up just one hit in the ninth.

Tomorrow's game 3 matchup has Defenders RHP-Brooks McNiven (0-0) going up against the Sea Dogs RHP-Junichi Tazawa (1-1). First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm. Catch all the action starting with the Defenders Pre-game Show at 12:40pm on the Defenders Flagship Station WICH 1310AM or online at ctdefenders.com.

The Defenders return home on May 1 to face the Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox). For more information or to purchase tickets, call the Defenders Box Office at (860)-887-7962 or online at ctdefenders.com.
