
Portland ends a 3-game losing streak â Bubba Bell homers again

(Portland, ME) - Portland starter LHP Felix Doubront (2-0) picked up his second straight win and RF Bubba Bell blasted a 2-run homer, aiding the Portland Sea Dogs (7-7) in their 3-1 victory over the Connecticut Defenders (6-9) on Friday night at Hadlock Field in front of 7,028 fans. The Sea Dogs snapped a 3-game losing streak and evened their series with Connecticut at one game apiece.
Connecticut's RHP Daryl Maday (0-1) lasted 4.1 IP in his fourth start of the year, allowing six hits and three runs to suffer the loss.
RHP Bryce Cox worked around a lead-off single by RF Eddy Martinez-Esteve in the ninth inning to earn his first Double-A save. Portland's bullpen worked four scoreless frames - RHP Chad Rhoades was perfect over 2 IP and RHP T.J. Large worked a scoreless eighth, both pitchers earned holds.
Bell had the game-winning hit for the âDogs, blasting a 2-run homer over the left-centerfield wall in the second inning. Portland added a run in the fifth on a run-scoring double by 1B Lars Anderson (2-for-4), scoring CF Josh Reddick.
Doubront struggled in the first inning but retired 14 of 16 batters after walking Martinez-Esteve to load the bases in the opening frame. Connecticut scored their lone run on DH Andrew D'Alessio's sacrifice fly but had only two runners reach base off Doubront in his final 4 IP. The lefty fanned a season-high of eight and threw 83 pitches.
LF Aaron Bates and SS Argenis Diaz each had two singles for the Sea Dogs, who have split 6 games against the Giants affiliate this season. Connecticut received their hits from 2B Sharlon Schoop (single), Martinez-Esteve (single) and 3B Brad Boyer (double)
