Tomcat...Starter Josh Tomlin led the way as the Aeros claimed their sixth straight win last night, striking out eight batters over five innings as Akron handled Altoona by a final count of 9-5. The eight punch-outs were a season-high for an Aeros pitcher, and were the most for Tomlin since he recorded eight Ks last July 11th while pitching for Class A Kinston. That effort came against the Lynchburg Hillcats, who are at the level directly below Altoona in the Pittsburgh Pirates chain. Tomlin had just three strikeouts through three innings as Altoona jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but settled down to record five strikeouts over the final two frames, including striking out the side in the fifth.
U-G-L-Y...The Aeros erased the early three-run hole thanks almost entirely to some unsightly Altoona miscues in the third and fourth innings. 2B Josh Rodriguez led off the third with a bloop single, and DH John Drennen followed with a grounder to second. Jim Negrych's throw to second pulled shortstop Pedro Lopez off the bag however, and RF Mickey Hall followed with a knock to center to load the bases with no one out. CF Jose Constanza then hit a bouncer to Negrych which should have been a double play, but Lopez's relay throw sailed past Jason Delaney at first base as two runs scored. The troubles continued for the Curve in the fourth, as C Carlos Santana singled to start the inning and 3B Niuman Romero then tried to move him up with a bunt. Altoona's Angel Gonzalez gloved the sacrifice cleanly but skipped the ball past Delaney as the runners advanced to second and third, and LF Nick Weglarz then hit a bouncer to second that Negrych threw away to score both men. Constanza followed later in the inning with a three-run double to break the game open, and Curve starter Jared Hughes departed soon after with a staggering line of seven unearned runs in 3.2 innings. The four errors by Altoona were a season-high and also a season-high for an Aeros opponent. The Curve rank 11th in the 12-team Eastern League in both team fielding percentage (.953) and total errors (22 in 13 games).
Familiar Faces...The two relievers who followed Hughes out of the Altoona bullpen were both former Aeros, as RHP Sean Smith worked 3.1 innings before Canton native LHP Shawn Nottingham followed with a scoreless eighth. Smith spent most of 2006 in Akron while Nottingham called Canal Park home in both 2007 and 2008. Did You Know...Courtesy of Dan Zangrilli in the Curve Media Relations office, the Aeros are 63-40 against Altoona all-time at Canal Park, good for a .612 winning percentage.
