Trenton Takes Rubber Game From Portland 8-2
June 29, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Trenton Thunder News Release
(Portland, ME)- The story early on was the pitching performance of LHP Phil Coke, and later in the game it was the Thunder offense as they come away with an impressive 8-2 victory in the rubber game over the Portland Sea Dogs. Coke pitched six strong innings, giving up seven hits, two runs (one earned), and one walk, while striking out five. RHP Steven Jackson was pretty impressive too, as he went three scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and one walk, while striking out three. The Thunder were short on pitchers, so they needed a strong performance by Phil Coke, and they got one. Jackson flew in before the game from Scranton Wilkes/Barre to provide help in the bullpen, and he did just that.
The Thunder offense, which has struggled in the month of June, broke out in this game big time, and they have no scored 15 runs in the last two games combined against Portland. In this game, LF Edwar Gonzalez and RF Jose Tabata were the main stars, but the whole team got involved as every player reached base at least once. Gonzalez went two-for-five with a two-run homerun in the sixth inning and an RBI double in the ninth inning. Tabata had one of his better games of the season as he also went two-for-five, with a two out RBI single in the fourth inning to put the Thunder on the board, and then he broke the game wide open in the ninth with a three-run homerun to left-center field, which made it 8-2 and sealed the victory for the Thunder.
The number seven overall prospect in the Red Sox system, according to Baseball America, RHP Michael Bowden went five and a third innings, giving up seven hits, three runs, and three walks in a losing effort, while striking out six. The Thunder and the Sea Dogs will go right back at it again tomorrow as the begin the first of four games at Waterfront Park. RHP Eric Hacker will go for the Thunder, facing LHP Dave Gassner for the Sea Dogs in Monday night's 7:05 game. The Thunder are now four games up on both Portland and Binghamton in the Eastern League Northern Division.
