Connecticut Defenders News Release

BINGHAMTON, NY- The Defenders smeared the home Mets on Sunday afternoon as Connecticut posted an unheralded nine runs in the third inning in a 14-5 drubbing.

Kyle Haines started off the game with a single and four consecutive Defenders singled behind him as three runs came into score during the hit parade to give Connecticut an early 3-0 advantage.

The B-Mets answered in the home half of the first with two runs of their own on Nick Evans' double and Caleb Stewart's infield RBI single as the lead quickly diminished to 3-2.

A scoreless second led to the most eventful inning of the 2008 season for the Defs. Ben Copeland singled, Eddy Martinez-Esteve doubled Copeland home and Adam Witter flew out to left field. Simon Klink lashed a base hit to plate Martinez-Esteve and Dave Maroul blasted his seventh homer of the year to score two more. Jake Wald re-started the rally with a single, Adam Cowart was plunked by a pitch, Haines walked and Antoan Richardson ripped a single to score Wald. Copeland then lifted a fly ball on the infield to record the second out of the frame. The Defs weren't done as Martinez-Esteve knocked his second run-scoring hit of the inning, Witter drove two runs to the plate on a laser beam and Klink bounced a ball through the infield to plate one more. Finally, Maroul struck out to end the marathon as Connecticut scored an unprecedented nine runs on nine hits.

The Mets would try and claw back as they would score one run in the third, one in the sixth and one in the seventh as Connecticut had single run innings in the fourth and the ninth in a favorable, 14-5 win.

Connecticut will travel home for a five-game home stand against the last place New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Tickets are available for the entire series at (860) 887-7962 or by visiting ctdefenders.com.
