
RHP Oneli Perez designated for assignment by Yankees

(Trenton, NJ)- The Trenton Thunder, Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, have announced that RHP Oneli Perez has been designated for assignment by the New York Yankees. RHP Steven Jackson was transferred from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to Trenton, and RHP Jose Valdez was promoted from Tampa to Trenton. The Thunder currently have 22 players on the active roster, three below the league maximum (24).
Perez was 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in 3 G for Trenton. He has also split the season between Charlotte (Triple-A) in the Chicago White Sox Organization, and Buffalo (Triple-A) in the Cleveland Indians Organization. Perez was 0-1 with a 9.53 ERA in 14 G for Charlotte. He was claimed off waivers by the Indians on 5/19 and assigned to Buffalo. He was 0-0 with a 7.11 ERA and 2 SV for Buffalo. Last season, Perez had a 6-2 record with a 2.10 ERA and 16 SV in 59 G for Birmingham (Double-A) in the White Sox Organization. He was originally signed as a non-drafted FA by the San Diego Padres on 2/15/01.
Jackson has a 1-3 record with a 6.35 ERA in 14 G for Trenton. He has recorded 1 SV. He has struck out 34 and walked 11 in 28.1 IP. He was 0-0 with 1 SV and a 4.46 ERA in 10 G for the Yankees. Last season he pitched 18 games for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and started in his first 11 appearances. He had a 4-8 record with a 5.97 ERA. He was 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 10 G for the Thunder last season. He was acqured by the Yankees along with RHP Ross Ohlendorf and INF Alberto Gonzalez from the Arizona Diamondbacks on 1/15/07. He was originally drafted by Arizona in the 10th round of the 2004 draft out of Clemson University.
Valdez was 6-2 with a 2.75 ERA in 27 G for Tampa including 3 SV. Last season he was 3-4 with a 2.87 ERA in 31 G with 3 SV for Tampa. This is his seventh professional season. He was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Yankees on 10/5/2000. This is his first call-up to Double-A.
Trenton plays the final game of three-game series this afternoon against the Portland Sea Dogs, the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, in Portland, ME. Game time is set for 1:00 PM. LHP Phil Coke (5-3, 3.21) will start for Trenton against Portland RHP Michael Bowden (7-3, 2.33). Trenton will return home on Monday night at 7:05 PM to take on Portland.
