Trenton Thunder News Release

(Trenton, NJ)-Trenton starting pitcher Phil Coke struck out a career-high 11 to lead the Thunder to a 1-0 win over the Portland Sea Dogs on Friday night at Waterfront Park. Coke picked up his first Double-A victory.

Trenton (17-12) scored the only run of the game in the 2nd inning. CF Matt Carson led off the inning with an infield single off of Portland starting pitcher Michael Bowden (1-3). Carson advanced to third base on a single by 1B Cody Ehlers, and then scored on a RBI fielder's choice from RF Jose Tabata to make it 1-0. Bowden took a tough loss going 6 IP, giving up just 4 H and 1 R.

Coke (1-1) made the 1-0 lead hold up. He went a season-high 7 IP and gave up only 5 H. He yielded just 1 BB, and retired the side 1-2-3 three different times. Portland's best opportunity to score off of Coke came in the third inning. CF Sean Danielson, who had three hits on the night, doubled off of Coke with one out in the inning. 2B Ryan Khoury followed with a single, but Danielson was thrown out at the plate by CF Matt Carson as he tried to score on the base-hit.

Thunder reliever Michael Gardner replaced Coke in the 8th inning. He tossed a perfect frame, but ran into trouble in the 9th inning. Khoury led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by SS Ramiro Pena. Khoury then advanced to third base on a wild pitch. After LF Jeff Corsaletti struck out, John Otness grounded a ball to Pena. Khoury came home on contact, but was forced into a run-down between third base and home plate. Khoury was finally tagged out by 3B Chris Malec after a 6-2-5-2-5 fielder's choice for the second out. Gardner then retired Aaron Bates on a ground out to preserve the win, and pick up his fourth save of the season.

The middle game of the three-game series is on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Jason Jones (4-0, 2.61) starts for Trenton against Portland LHP Kris Johnson (2-1, 4.94).
