Connecticut Defenders News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY- The Defenders continued their losing ways on the road as they limped to a 5-3 loss to the fifth-place Binghamton Mets Friday night.
Garrett Broshuis struggled right out of the gate as he gave up two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Fernando Martinez doubled, Nick Evans singled him home and took second while Matt Carp was in the box. The following pitch, Carp lined a single to the outfield to bring home Evans from second as the Mets claimed a 2-0 lead.
Broshuis' struggles continued in the home half of the second Martinez lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score the runner from third as the lead extended to 3-0.
The Defenders' scoreless woes lasted four innings as Mets' starter Bobby Parnell looked good on the bump. But in the top of the fifth, Connecticut cracked the score column. Dave Maroul pounded a solo homer to left field to get things started as Olmo Rosario was hit by a pitch. Broshuis bunted Rosario to second and Ben Copeland singled in the speedy Rosario home to make it a one run game, 3-2, Mets.
Just as soon as the Defenders made it close, the Mets got a little insurance. In the home half of the fifth, Dan Murphy hit a home run of his own to open the lead, 4-2.
A scoreless sixth and seventh made way to a fruitful eighth as Travis Ishikawa tapped an RBI groundout to score Copeland from third to tighten things up, 4-3.
Just like clockwork, the Defenders gave their hard earned run back to the Mets as Nick Evans connected on a solo blast to make it a 5-3 game.
The Defenders couldn't get anything going in the ninth as they went down in order and lost their ninth game in eleven tries on the road. Connecticut will take on the Mets in Binghamton tomorrow at 1:05 as the AT&T Real Yellow Pages Pre-Game Show will begin promptly at 12:50pm.
