Trenton scores early to hold on for a 6-3 win

(Trenton, N.J.) - The Trenton Thunder (12-9) scored all six runs off Matt Barnes (1-1), taking the series opener from the Portland Sea Dogs (11-9), 6-3 on Friday night at Arm & Hammer Park. Portland has dropped 17 of the last 22 games in Trenton, N.J., dating back to the beginning of last season.
Nik Turley (2-1) worked five innings to earn the win for the Thunder. The lefty allowed six hits, three runs, four walks and fanned four. Jose Ramirez tossed four scoreless frames in his Double-A debut to notch the save
Barnes yielded a career-high 11 hits on six runs over 4.2 innings in his first loss of the season. The righty walked two and fanned six.
Portland struck first, scoring a two-out run in the opening frame off Turley. Travis Shaw walked and Juan Carlos Linares was hit-by-a-pitch. Tony Thomas (2-for-4, 3 RBI) nailed the first pitch to left field for a run-scoring double. Shaw walked three times, extending his on-base streak to nine games.
Trenton enjoyed their first turn against Barnes, tying the game at one. With runners at first and third, J.R. Murphy nailed an RBI double to left
With the game tied at one, the Thunder scored twice in the third and fourth innings, taking a 5-1 lead. Kyle Roller nailed a two-run double and Casey Stevenson delivered a run-scoring single. The Sea Dogs came back in the fifth against Turley. Heiker Meneses led off with a double, Shaw walked and Thomas nailed a two-run triple.
The Thunder took a 6-3 lead in the fifth on Neil Medchill's, two-out RBI single.
Keith Couch worked 2.1 hitless frames with five strikeouts and Chris Martin pitched a clean eighth. Portland's relievers are scoreless in their last 9.2 innings.
