
Trenton loses 8-7 heartbreaker

(New Britain, CT)- New Britain Catcher Wilson Ramos connected on a game-winning RBI double off of Trenton Reliever Kanekoa Texeira in the ninth inning to lift the Rock Cats to an 8-7 win over Trenton on Friday night from New Britain Stadium. The Rock Cats now lead the Thunder by two games in the Eastern League Northern Division race for second place, with three games left. Trenton needs to win the remaining three games of the series to advance to the Eastern League Playoffs.
With the game tied at 7-7 in the ninth inning, Designated Hitter Luke Hughes led off the ninth inning with a walk. He scored the game-winning run on the double by Ramos. Texeira (8-6) took the loss as he did not retire a batter in the ninth. New Britain Reliever Frank Mata (2-4) picked up the win by tossing a scoreless ninth. Down 7-0, Trenton scored seven runs to tie the game at 7-7. Trenton started the comeback trail with a run in the fifth inning. Designated Hitter Richie Robnett led off with a double against New Britain Starting Pitcher Deolis Guerra. He scored on a single by Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez.
The Thunder scored six times in the seventh inning to tie the game. The first five batters of the inning reached base. Robnett walked to start the inning and moved to second base on a single by Gonzalez. A single by Pilittere loaded the bases for Vechionacci. He walked to cut the deficit to 7-2. Pinch-hitter Noah Hall followed with a bases-clearing triple off of New Britain to cut the gap to 7-5. Later in the frame, Matt Cusick came through with an RBI single. The Thunder tied the game on a two-out error by New Britain Second baseman Alejandro Machado. 10 Thunder batters came to the plate in the inning. Guerra received a no-decision. He gave up six hits and five runs over six-plus innings. Cusick, Gonzalez, Hall, and Pilittere each had two hits for Trenton in the loss.
New Britain scored four runs in the first inning against Thunder Starting Pitcher Jeremy Bleich (3-7). The first seven batters of the inning reached base safely for New Britain. Left fielder Brian Dinkelman singled and moved to second base on a wild pitch. He advanced to third base on a wild pitch by Third baseman Ramon Santana. Designated Hitter Luke Hughes drove Dinkelman home with an RBI single to make it 1-0. Catcher Wilson Ramos then produced an RBI single to increase the lead to 2-0. After a walk to Right fielder Juan Portes, Shortstop Steve Singleton walked in a run to extend the lead to 3-0. Second baseman Alejandro Machado capped off the scoring in the frame with an RBI single. Unofficially, Bleich threw 46 pitches in the first inning. Bleich went three innings and allowed seven hits and six runs.
New Britain tacked on two more runs in the third inning. With two outs in the inning, Second baseman Alejandro Machado reached on an error by Third baseman Marcos Vechionacci. After a single by First baseman Whit Robbins, Shortstop Yancarlos Ortiz connected on a two-run triple. New Britain made it 7-0 in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Shortstop Steve Singleton.
Trenton and New Britain play the second game of their four-game series on Saturday night from New Britain Stadium. RHP Ryan Pope (5-12, 4.85) will start for Trenton against New Britain RHP Matt Fox (9-9, 3.59). Game time is set for 6:35 p.m.
