Senators Double Down On Baysox

September 4, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release

BOWIE, Md. - Harrisburg stroked six doubles and pulled away late to down the Baysox 7-3 Friday night in Bowie. Chris Marrero had an RBI double and a two-run home run for the Senators, as Baysox right-hander Pedro Beato was dealt his third loss of the season. Left fielder Lou Montanez made his return to Bowie as part of a major league rehab assignment, making his first appearance since winning the Eastern League triple crown last season and taking home league MVP honors.

The Senators opened up the scoring in the first inning, as Beato allowed a one-out double to Ricardo Nanita to put a runner in scoring position. Joel Guzman flied out to right for the second out of the inning, but Marvin Lowrance and Marrero followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to take a 2-0 lead.

Beato settled down after the first inning, using his fastball to put away nine of the next 10 hitters he faced. He allowed a run in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Jamel Spearman, and went on to finish his night after 7.0 innings allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out two and not walking a batter. In what was his last start of the 2009 regular season, Beato reflected on his performance from the last year and said he feels much more confident with his fastball than he did to close out 2008.

"I have to say I've been stubborn not using (my fastball)," Beato said. "Today was a good example because I didn't have a great fastball but I had great location, it shows that they have been preaching to me all season."

The Baysox tallied a run in the fourth inning against Harrisburg left-hander Aaron Thompson. With right fielder Tyler Henson on first after a two-out walk, first baseman Steve Torrealba lined a ground-rule double under the fence in left to put men on second and third. With catcher Adam Donachie at the plate, a breaking ball by Thompson skipped away from Harrisburg catcher Luke Montz allowing Henson to score from third on the wild pitch.

In the fifth inning, Montanez conjured up memories of a historic 2008 season, lacing an RBI single to score center fielder Matt Angle and cut the Harrisburg lead to one.

"The pressure was on from the beginning, (manager) Brad (Komminsk) told me we were a couple games back and they needed a contribution," Montanez said. "I'm just looking to see a lot of pitches and stand in the box again, it's just about being comfortable."

Montanez was happy to be back in Bowie after a frustrating 2009 season marred by a thumb injury that kept him out of action for three months. Nevertheless, the Baltimore outfielder was in good spirits as he continues his rehabilitation in hopes to play with the Orioles again this season.

"I got a warm reception from the people that were here," he said. "Everybody knows me and is calling me ‘Lou' so it feels good to have some support."

Harrisburg struck for two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, as right-hander Brian Parker got the first two outs before a throwing error by third baseman Brandon Waring extended the inning. Marrero made the Baysox pay, launching a towering home run over the wall in left for his first home run of the season and putting Harrisburg on top 5-2.

Waring led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a double and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Torrealba, but the Senators added two more runs in the top of the ninth to pull away. With runners at first and third and one out, Nanita brought home a run with an RBI groundout. Joel Guzman followed with the Senators sixth double of the game, scoring Jamel Spearman to close out the scoring for Harrisburg.

The Baysox will look to get back on track tomorrow, as the two teams play a doubleheader at Prince George's Stadium. RHP Brandon Erbe (4-3, 2.45) takes the hill in game one for the Baysox against RHP Erik Arnesen (8-5, 3.65). In game two, RHP Tim Bascom (2-7, 4.38) tries his luck against RHP Carlos Martinez (7-5, 3.91) for the Senators. The action begins at 5:35 p.m. as the Baysox celebrate Football Frenzy at the stadium!
