Trenton Holds Off New Hampshire 3-2 Saturday Night

(Manchester, NH)- Thunder 3B Chris Malec had the go-ahead RBI single in the 5th inning and Trenton held off New Hampshire 3-2 on Saturday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium in Manchester, NH. The Trenton bullpen tossed four scoreless innings to preserve the win.

With Trenton down 2-0, the Thunder scored three runs in the 5th inning to take the lead. With 1B Cody Ehlers on second base with one out, 2B Reegie Corona connected on an RBI double off of New Hampshire starting pitcher Brett Cecil (3-2) to cut the deficit to 2-1. SS Ramiro Pena followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. Later in the frame, Malec produced the go-ahead RBI single off of New Hampshire reliever Seth Overbey to put the Thunder in front 3-2. LF Colin Curtis went 3 x 5 for Trenton in the win. Malec and C P.J. Pilittere had 2 hits as well. Cecil gave up 6 H and 3 ER in 4.1 IP to take the loss.

Thunder starting pitcher Eric Hacker (4-1) earned his third consecutive victory. He went 5 IP and and allowed only 3 H and 2 ER. He struck out 4 and walked 2. The Thunder bullpen combined to go 4 IP and allowed only 1 H. Thunder reliever Zach Kroenke went 1.1 perfect IP, and Michael Gardner retired the only two batters he faced. Mark Melancon went the final two innings to earn his second save. He struck out 5 and walked 1. Trenton had its run of 24 consecutive scoreless innings come to an end when New Hampshire scored its lone two runs in the 3rd inning against Hacker.

Trenton and New Hampshire will play the third game of the four-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. RHP George Kontos (3-8, 3.39) will start for Trenton against New Hampshire RHP Brandon Magee (1-11, 5.81).
