Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton Starting Pitcher Christian Garcia hurled seven shutout innings to lead the Thunder past Bowie 7-0 on Thursday afternoon from Waterfront Park. Trenton won four of the five games in the series against Bowie, and seven of eight games on its homestand. The shutout on Thursday was Trenton's third of the series.
Trenton (29-23) scored two runs in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Center fielder Seth Fortenberry led off with a bunt single against Bowie Starting Pitcher Troy Patton. Shortstop Reegie Corona followed with a single to advance Fortenberry to second base. Second baseman Justin Snyder followed and dropped a sacrifice bunt in front of the plate. Bowie Catcher Adam Donachie picked up the bunt, and threw wildly down the first base line for an error. The error allowed Fortenberry to score the first run of the inning for Trenton. Later in the frame, Left fielder Noah Hall lifted a sacrifice fly RBI to score Corona to make it 2-0. The Thunder added a run in the fourth inning on a fielder's choice ground ball off the bat of Third baseman Marcos Vechionacci. In the fifth inning, Second baseman Justin Snyder belted a solo home run, his third home run of the season, to increase the lead to 4-0.
Trenton scored three runs in the eighth inning off of Bowie Reliever Chad Thall to blow the game open. Vechionacci had a sacrifice fly RBI for the first run of the inning. The second run of the frame came home on an error by Bowie Second baseman Miguel Abreu. The final run of the inning was plated on an RBI single by Shortstop Reegie Corona.
Garcia (2-0) scattered four hits over seven shutout innings. He struck out six and walked two. The seven-inning appearance is his longest outing of the season. The outing is his longest performance since a seven-inning victory for Tampa over Dunedin on 8/26/08 in the Florida State League. Patton (6-2) went seven innings and allowed a season-high in hits (seven) and runs (four). Only two of the four runs were earned.
In his first game back with the Thunder since May 13th, Corona went 3 x 5 with a double, run, and an RBI. In his second game with the Thunder, Desginated Hitter Jesus Montero went 1 x 3 with a run.
Trenton starts a three-game series on Friday night against the Portland Sea Dogs (Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox) from Hadlock Field in Portland, ME. RHP Zach McAllister (4-2, 1.84) will start for Trenton against Portland RHP Jared Plummer (4-1, 4.58).
