Trenton beats Akron 5-1

(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton First baseman Jorge Vazquez and Designated Hitter Kevin Smith each hit home runs to help lead the Thunder past Akron 5-1 on Wednesday night from Waterfront Park. Trenton snapped a three-game losing streak with the win.

Trenton (17-19) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Shortstop Eduardo Nunez led off with a single against Akron Starting Pitcher Hector Rondon (5-2), and advanced to second base when Center fielder Seth Fortenberry was hit by a pitch. Later in the frame, First baseman Jorge Vazquez lifted a sacrifice fly RBI to plate Nunez. Vazquez added to the lead in the fourth inning on a solo home run to make it 2-0. The home run was his seventh for the Thunder, and he now has 28 RBI in 23 games. The Thunder padded the lead with three runs in the sixth inning. Vazquez singled with one out in the sixth inning, and went to second base on a two-out single by Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez. Designated Hitter Kevin Smith then belted a three-run home run to increase Trenton's advantage to 5-0. The home run was his second of the season.

Trenton Starting Pitcher Christian Garcia went 4 1/3 innings in his season-debut. He yielded four hits and no runs. He struck out four and walked three. Trenton Reliever Kanekoa Texeira (4-2) earned the win in relief of Garcia. He tossed 2 2/3 and allowed two hits and one run. Akron (28-9) scored its lone run of the night on a solo home run by First baseman Beau Mills in the seventh inning. Rondon went five innings and struck out six in the loss. He allowed four hits and two rund.

Trenton and Akron play the rubber game of the three-game series on Thursday morning at Waterfront Park. RHP Zach McAllister (2-1, 2.38) will start for Trenton against Akron RHP Jeanmar Gomez (3-0, 0.45). Game time is slated for 11:05 a.m.
