Trenton and Bowie Split a Double-Header

(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton Infielder Carlos Mendoza notched the game-winning RBI single in the second game of a double-header on Tuesday night to lift the Thunder to a 5-4 win. Bowie won the first game by a score of 7-2.

In the first game, Bowie jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Bowie Catcher Adam Donachie had an RBI single with two outs in the first inning to plate Bowie Second baseman Miguel Abreu. Later in the inning, Right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion connected on a three-run double to increase Bowie's lead to 4-0. Bowie Designated Hitter Guillermo Rodriguez followed with an RBI double to make it 5-0. Down 5-0, Trenton tallied a run with two outs in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run by Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez. Gonzalez finished the game 2 x 3. Trailing 7-1, the Thunder scored its final run of the game in the third inning on an RBI line-out by Center fielder Colin Curtis.

Bowie RHP Jake Arrieta (5-3) picked up the win for the Baysox. He scattered five hits and two runs in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out nine and walked three. Trenton RHP Ryan Pope (2-4) took the loss. He allowed eight hits and seven runs (three earned) in six innings. He struck out four and walked two.

In the second game, Bowie scored two runs in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. With runners at first and second base and no outs, Catcher Guillermo Rodriguez picked up an RBI single to put Bowie on top. Later in the inning, Shortstop Robert Valido connected on a sacrifice fly RBI to increase the lead to 2-0. Trenton sliced the Bowie lead to 2-1 in the second inning on an RBI groundout by Left fielder James Cooper. The Thunder scored two runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Center fielder Seth Fortenberry and Cooper led off the inning with back-to-back singles off of Bowie Starting Pitcher Pat Egan. Shortstop Justin Snyder followed by dropping a sacrifice bunt. Rodriguez picked up the bunt in front of the plate, and threw wildly down the third base line for an error to allow Fortenberry to score the tying run. Cooper scored the go-ahead run on an infield RBI single by Second baseman Chris Malec. In the sixth inning, Cooper delivered an RBI single for an insurance run to increase Trenton's lead to 4-2. Cooper finished the game 2 x 3 with a run and an RBI.

But, Bowie would tie the game in the top of the seventh inning on a two-run triple by Third baseman Jonthan Tucker. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Trenton Designated Hitter singled to start the inning off of Bowie Reliever Ryan Ouellette (1-1). He moved to second base on a ground out by Second baseman Chris Malec. Curtis scored the winning run on an RBI single by Mendoza. Curtis went 2 x 4 in the win with a run. Trenton Reliever Amaury Sanit (1-1) picked up the win with 2/3 of an inning of relief.

Trenton and Bowie continue their series on Wednesday night. RHP Christian Garcia (1-0, 0.60) will start for Trenton against Bowie RHP Fredy Deza (1-1, 3.38).
