Akron RubberDucks News Release

Monday Marathon...

It took 12 innings and more than four-and-a-half hours, but the Aeros finally prevailed over Reading 13-10 in the opener of a four-game series last night. Akron trailed 5-0 after just three innings, but scored thrice in the fourth and fifth innings to take a short-lived lead before the Phillies went back on top at 8-6. A two-run homer by RF John Drennen tied the game at 8-8 in the seventh however, and the sides traded two-run rallies in the ninth to push the contest to extra innings. Both clubs left a runner in scoring position in the 10th and Akron stranded 2B Cristo Arnal at third base in the 11th before finally breaking through against reliever Joe Bisenius in the 12th. C Carlos Santana ripped a one-out double down the right field line with one out, and C Armando Camacaro put the Aeros ahead to stay with a two-out RBI single to center. Drennen then iced the game two batters later, smoking a two-run double to left-center to account for the final margin. An Historic Affair...When the dust finally settled last night, the Aeros had compiled season-highs with 13 runs, 20 hits and five doubles, along with stranding 14 runners as a team before the comeback was complete. Six Aeros had multi-hit games, and the team went 6-for-19 with men in scoring position. RHP Erik Stiller (2-3) blanked Reading over the final three frames for the victory, and has now turned in eight consecutive scoreless innings over his last four appearances. The 4:31 contest was just 22 minutes shorter than the longest game in franchise history, a 16-inning game at Canal Park against Reading on April 8th 2004. Amazing Arnal...While Drennen provided a multitude of big blasts last night, it was Arnal who made franchise history. The native of Caracas, VZ finished 5-7 and tied a franchise record with five hits, the first Aero to do so in a single game since Kevin Kouzmanoff on May 4th, 2006. Arnal drove in one run and scored another, while improving his batting average to .400 (12-30) in 10 games with the Aeros this season. He came to Akron from Class A Kinston on May 21st, and in 26 games played between the K-Tribe, Aeros and Class AAA Columbus is hitting .360 with eight RBI, 13 runs scored and a .415 on-base percentage. In those 26 games this season, the 23-year-old utility man has appeared 16 times at second base, six times at short, four times at first base and once in center field. A Striking Beau...1B Beau Mills continued his hot hitting with a 2-7 performance last night, including two runs scored. It was his third multi-hit game in his last six outings, and he continues to slug very well outside of Canal Park. In 21 games on the road, he is hitting .310 with three of his four home runs and a .476 slugging percentage.

Handy Haines...Akron received a new player today, as the Indians signed IF Kyle Haines and assigned him to the Aeros. Haines was playing for the Camden Riversharks of the independent Atlantic League and spent all of last year in the EL with Connecticut.
