Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- For the second straight night the Defenders (28-23) fell at the hands of the Rock Cats by the final score of 2-1 Tuesday night at Dodd Stadium. Connecticut has now dropped their last three games.
DH-Erik Lis jacked a solo homerun over the right field wall for another timely hit which balanced a strong pitching presence for New Britain as they took game two of the best of four series and now lead 2-0.
It was a matchup of two righties and both didn't disappoint. Defender's starter, RHP-Tim Alderson (2-1) tossed a career best eight innings but the Rock Cats capitalized when he slipped just a tad bit. New Britain plated their first run in the fourth as CF-Brandon Roberts singled but was awarded second on a 3B-Brad Boyer throwing error. 3B-Danny Valencia then ripped a one out double to drive in Roberts for a 1-0 advantage. Alderson allowed the two earned runs off of six hits and struck out three while suffering his first loss.
Trailing 2-0 entering the home half of the seventh, Boyer delivered a one out single followed by a 1B-Brett Pill RBI double to trim the lead in half but that's all the Defenders could muster off the Rock Cats pitching staff. Boyer and Pill lead the offense going a combined 5 for 8 in the middle of the lineup.
New Britain used three pitchers in the victory but starter, RHP Matt Fox (5-2) stole the show as he bewildered the Defenders hitters for 6.2 strong innings of four hit ball, allowing one earned run and fanned three en route to his fourth straight victory. Relievers, RHP-Julio Lugo and RHP-Anthony Slama combined to shut the door as Slama picked up his eleventh save of the season.
Connecticut will look to stop the three game skid tomorrow as RHP-Henry Sosa (4-0) will take the bump against Rock Cats' righty, Jeff Manship (4-4). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm.
