Travs Roll Over Drillers
August 27, 2009 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release
A night after rallying from a five-run deficit to win, the Tulsa Drillers found themselves unable to climb out of an 11-run hole against the Arkansas Travelers Thursday night. The Travelers took an 11-0 lead thanks in large part to a big six-run third inning, then held off an attempted rally from the Drillers to eventually post a 16-5 win.
The loss trimmed first-place Tulsa's lead atop the North Division standings to 1 ½ games over Northwest Arkansas. The Naturals meeting with Springfield on Thursday was rained out.
The Travelers jumped to an early lead on the Drillers with three runs in the top of the first inning against starter Keith Weiser. Peter Bourjos led off with a single before he stole second and took third on Hainley Statia's sacrifice bunt. He then scored on a single by Nate Sutton. Mark Trumbo reached on an error and Ryan Mount loaded the bases with a single. Wil Ortiz singled home both Sutton and Trumbo for the three-run lead.
Arkansas increased its lead to 9-0 with its six-run third. The uprising included five hits and was aided by two errors from the Drillers. Trumbo started the inning with a triple. Bourjos added a two-run double and Statia a two-run single.
Two more runs in the top of the fifth put the Travs up 11-0.
The Drillers cut into the margin with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. The rally began with consecutive home runs by Daniel Carte and Daniel Mayora, the first two hitters of the inning. Both homers cleared the centerfield fence.
With one out, the inning continued as Anthony Jackson doubled and scored on a base hit by Danny Sandoval. Michael Paulk singled, and Jeff Kindel followed with a two-run double to cut the lead to 11-5.
Arkansas added single runs in both the seventh and eighth innings, then got a 3-run homer from Jay Caligiuri in the ninth to cap its big night.
Paulk completed the game's scoring with a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, his 8th home run of the year
The Travelers finished with 20 hits with every starter getting at least one. It matched the most hits surrendered by the Tulsa pitching staff in a game this season.
Ortiz finished with five hits, while Bourjos added four. The Arkansas offense also benefited from four errors by the Drillers, who entered the game as the Texas League's best-fielding team.
The loss for Weiser dropped his record to 8-14. The hard-luck lefthander was charged with nine runs in three innings, but only three of the runs were earned.
The Drillers will end their four-game homestand on Friday night against the Travs. Tulsa's Samuel Deduno (12-3, 2.68 ERA) will battle Amalio Diaz (2-6, 3.96 ERA) of Arkansas with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM at Drillers Stadium.
