Springfield Cardinals News Release

North Little Rock, AR - The Arkansas Travelers avoided the series sweep with a wild 15-12 win against the Springfield Cardinals before 7,120 fans at Dickey-Stephens Park on Friday night. Despite the six-game winning streak closing, the Cardinals do collect their fourth straight series win, three-games-to-one.

Springfield LHP Kyle Hald and Arkansas RHP Michael Brady (W, 1-2) alternated scoreless frames through the first three innings, before the Cardinals (25-35) broke through in the top of the fourth. With one away in the top of the fourth inning, LF Mike O'Neill pulled a double to right field. DH Anthony Garcia followed with a single to center, putting runners at the corners. However, Brady induced a comebacker by 1B Jonathan Rodriguez that led to O'Neill being retired on a fielder's choice. Garcia made it to third on the play with Rodriguez able to get to second, putting the pair in scoring position for C Michael Ohlman. Ohlman came through with a two-run single to shallow right field, bringing home both runners for the 2-0 lead for Springfield.

Hald dealt a quick 1-2-3 bottom of the fourth, but Arkansas (31-28) put together a huge rally in the bottom of the fifth, tying the all-time Texas League record with 14 runs in the inning. The Travs utilized 10 walks in the inning to fuel the rally, which set the Texas League all-time high for most free passes issued in a single frame. Around the walks, Arkansas collected six hits in the inning, led by 1B Brian Hernandez's two-run single and a two-run double. Following Hernandez's two-run double against LHP Lee Stoppelman (L, 0-1), 3B Bruce Caldwell took over on the mound to find the frame's final out. Three more runs did come in, but Caldwell dealt a strikeout to 3B Drew Maggi to close the long inning, which lasted 58 minutes and included 105 pitches in total.

The Cardinals, however, refused to go down without a fight. Trailing, 14-2, Springfield scored an unearned run in the sixth inning before rallying for five runs in the top of the eighth. After O'Neill reached on an error to start the eighth, Garcia and Rodriguez both worked walks to load the bases with no outs. C Jose Gonzalez then forced in O'Neill with an RBI walk, before RF Nick Martini ripped a two-run triple into the right field corner. Martini darted home next on an RBI groundout by SS Aledmys Diaz, decreasing the deficit to 14-8.

After the Travs plated one run against Martini, who followed Caldwell on the mound, the Cardinals struck for four more in the top of the ninth. O'Neill and Garcia again sparked the charge with consecutive singles. One out later, Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice that retired Garcia at second, putting runners at the corners with two away. With the Cards down to their final out, Martini crushed a three-run home run to right field. He tallied five RBIs in the last two innings and missed the cycle by just a double, while also pitching 1.1 innings. After Martini's blast, Diaz followed with one of his own, a solo shot to left field that brought the Cardinals within just three runs of tying it. Caldwell, who had tossed two relief innings, then doubled himself on to keep the game going. However, RHP Greg Mahle (S, 1) won the battle against 2B Breyvic Valera with a game-ending strikeout, and the Travelers escaped with the 15-12 win.
