Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
MIDLAND, TX - Joe Musgrove tossed seven innings of one-run ball Friday night as Corpus Christi swept the series at Security Bank Ballpark and secured the Texas League South first-half title with a 3-1 triumph over the RockHounds.
The Hooks, winners of six in a row, now stand 41-18 and own the best winning percentage (.695) in minor league baseball.
Musgrove was forced to wait through an hour and 34 minute rain delay before making his Double-A debut. The 22-year-old right-hander made up for lost time by retiring 12 of the first 13 batters he faced.
Corpus Christi posted a couple of early runs. In the third, Roberto Pena cracked a double that bounced into the Hooks' left-field bullpen. With two away, Chan-Jong Moon hit a soft grounder to first that was mishandled by Matt Olson, allowing Pena to cross the pay station.
In the fourth, Chris Jensen surrendered a lead-off two-bagger to Andrew Aplin. Aplin advanced to third on a grounder to second and scored when Jio Mier muscled a base hit into right.
The lone run for Midland was a lead-off homer off the bat of Renato Nunez in the fifth. The next two RockHounds reached but Musgrove retired the side via a trio of fly balls.
Musgrove dodged a double to open the sixth and worked around a two-out single in the seventh. He fanned three and did not walk a batter, throwing 56 of 87 pitches for strikes.
The Hooks added a key insurance run in the eighth thanks to a lead-off triple by Teoscar Hernandez. Two batters later, Tyler White plated Hernandez with a line drive single into left-center.
Chris Cotton authored a perfect eighth and Travis Ballew bypassed an error in the ninth with a double play to secure his second save.
Corpus Christi now carries its 24-7 road record into San Antonio. The series begins Friday night with a 7:05 first pitch at Wolff Stadium.
