Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
WASHINGTON, PA - For the second straight night the Traverse City Beach Bums took an early lead, but this time were able to expand it en route to a 7-3 win over the Washington Wild Things.
As they did on Friday, Traverse City scored in the first inning as with one out, Ryan Still walked before Jose Vargas hit his league-leading 19th homer of the season for a 2-0 TC lead. The Beach Bums would increase the lead in the third as Brian Heere singled and moved up on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Chase Burch singled home Heere for a 3-0 lead.
Washington would cut into the gap with single runs in the fourth and fifth to make it 3-2, but Traverse City went back on the offensive in the sixth. With one out, Jeff Flagg singled. Kyle Colligan then roped a double down the leftfield line to score Flagg and make it 4-2. Sean Gusrang followed with a single, plating Colligan for a 5-2 Beach Bums edge. After a walk to Marcus Nidiffer, TC capped the scoring in the frame with a Kyle Eveland RBI single to bring home Gusrang and push the lead to four runs. The two teams would trade seventh inning tallies to round out the scoring.
Matt Miller (3-2) earned the win with three strong innings of relief. Scott Dunn made his first start of the year for Traverse City and went four solid innings allowing one run on two hits. Casey Barnes (1-4) took the loss for the Wild Things.
Offensively for the Beach Bums, Vargas and Eveland had two hits apiece while Gusrang and Vargas each drove in a pair of runs.
The rubber game of the series comes up on Sunday with Jacob Clem (3-4, 3.13) on the mound for Traverse City against Gary Lee (3-3, 2.82) for Washington. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with the pregame show on Sunny Country 101.9 beginning at 6:45. The Beach Bums return home on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. for a Military Monday contest against Florence. For tickets call 943-0100 or visit tcbeachbums.com.
