Joliet Slammers News Release

JOLIET SLAMMERS (21-28) @ SOUTHERN ILLINOIS MINERS (29-20)

Saturday, July 14 - 7:05 p.m. CT

Rent One Park - Marion, IL

Game #50 - Road Game #23 (21-28), (11-11)

RHP #4 Steven Maxwell (5-4, 3.64 ERA) vs. RHP #18 Cody Hall (2-0, 2.10 ERA)

Last time out...

Jim Schult went seven strong innings and struck out a franchise record-tying 10 batters to pick up the win as the Slammers beat the Miners by a final score of 5-1 Friday night. Hector Pellot got the Slammers on the board first with a solo home run in the first inning. But Southern Illinois rallied in the fourth as Carlos Mendez doubled in Jake Kaase to tie the game. Neither team scored again until the seventh inning when the Slammers pushed three runs across. Patrick Norris tripled and with runners at the corners Abel Nieves smacked an RBI single to give Joliet the 2-1 edge. Later in the inning Kyle Maunus smacked a two-out, two-RBI single to extend the lead to 4-1. They'd tack on another run in the eighth on a Kaase throwing errors. But it was the Jim Schult show was the right-hander gave up only four hits in his seven innings, walking one and striking out the record-tying 10 batters.

For Starters...

Steven Maxwell is coming off a strong start on July 8 against the Normal CornBelters as he went eight innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits. Maxwell did not walk anyone and struck out seven to pick up his team-leading fifth win of the season. Maxwell put up outstanding numbers at Division One powerhouse Texas Christian University and got drafted twice, once by the Minnesota Twins, and once by the Chicago Cubs. Maxwell's junior season at TCU saw him tally an 11-2 record with a 2.70 ERA. Maxwell tossed 103.1 innings that season and struck out 93 batters while only walking 34 in 18 starts. He was a 2010 2nd-team Louisville Slugger all-American, the 2010 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year, a 2010 1st-team All-Mountain West Conference selection, a 2010 ABCA 2nd-team All-Midwest Region selection and he made the 2010 NCAA Fort Worth Regional All-Tournament Team. His pitching helped lead TCU to the College World Series. Maxwell was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 12th round of the 2010 draft but elected to return to TCU for his senior season. Injuries shortened Maxwell's senior campaign but the right-hander still went 5-1 with a 3.13 ERA in 11 starts. He was named to the All-Mountain West 2nd Team at the end of the season. Maxwell finished his collegiate career with a 21-5 record and a 3.43 ERA. He was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 37th round of the 2011 draft.

Going for the series win...

More walks than strike outs...

All-Star starter Abel Nieves is the only Slammer with more walks (28) than strike outs (16).

Southern Illinois Connections...
