Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Conrad Gregor's opposite-field, two-run, walk-off single plated Andrew Aplin and Chan-Jong Moon as Corpus Christi edged Arkansas 3-2 Saturday at Whataburger Field before 5,628.

The Hooks entered the home ninth trailing 2-0 against a fresh pitcher, Danny Reynolds. The Travelers' nightmare began when Reynolds struck lead-off hitter Teoscar Hernandez with a pitch. Reynolds then walked Aplin before uncorking a wild pitch, allowing both runners to move up 90 feet.

Hernandez crossed when Tyler White lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, and Aplin slid in safely on the back end at third. Reynolds walked Colin Moran, who was replaced at first by pinch-runner Moon. Reynolds (0-2) then hit Jio Mier to load the bases for Gregor, who laced the game-winner into left field off new reliever Kurt Spomer.

Arkansas starter Michael Brady, Alan Busenitz, and Eduard Santos blanked Corpus Christi for eight innings. They combined for 12 strikeouts and retired 15 straight from the third to the eighth.

Reynolds' wildness and Gregor's clutch performance made a winner of Jandel Gustave (2-1), who fanned two during a six-up, six-down sequence.

Brady left Tony Kemp at third in the first and then pitched around two singles before the Travelers rewarded him with a two-run third. Back-to-back doubles from Zach Wright and Drew Maggi produced the night's initial score. Brian Holmes finally retired Sherman Johnson after a 12-pitch plate appearance and Eric Stamets' single advanced Maggi to third. Holmes began a 1-3-6 pickoff of Stamets, but shortstop Mier's throw home was too late to catch Maggi.

Holmes wasn't allowed to finish the sixth, lifted for Juan Minaya. Outside of the third, Holmes faced two over the minimum. His line: 5 2/3 innings, five hits, a walk, and six strikeouts. Sixty-one of his 92 pitches were strikes.

Kemp extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a first-inning single.

Hooks right-hander Vince Velasquez (3-0) and southpaw Nate Smith (5-4) are the scheduled pitchers for Sunday's 6:05 series finale. It's H-E-B Kids Day, so all children run the bases postgame.
