Springfield Cardinals News Release

Springfield, MO - The Springfield Cardinals guaranteed their third straight series win with an 8-0 blowout of the Midland RockHounds before 6,238 fans at Hammons Field on Saturday evening.

With their fifth shutout win of the season, the Cardinals have gone 4-1 on the current homestand and have won six of their last eight games overall. Springfield goes for the series sweep in the homestand finale at 2:10pm on Sunday.

The Cardinals (21-34) got off to a powerful start, striking for three runs in the bottom of the first against LHP Chris Lamb (L, 0-5). With one down, SS Aledmys Diaz started the rally with a sharp single to left field. After advancing to second base on a groundout, Diaz then raced home on an RBI single from 1B Jonathan Rodriguez, cracking the scoreless tie. C Michael Ohlman added to the early lead right away, blasting a mammoth two-run home run to left field, increasing the advantage to 3-0. With the long-ball, Ohlman has now driven in at least one RBI in 11 of his last 12 games.

Springfield kept swinging away in the bottom of the second. LF Anthony Garcia led off with a double, followed quickly by a towering two-run home run from 3B Patrick Wisdom, stretching the lead to 5-0.

Meanwhile, Cardinals RHP Kurt Heyer kept the RockHounds (29-26) at bay through his 4.1 innings in the spot start. Heyer, who has served exclusively as a reliever this year, allowed only four hits and one walk, while striking out four in the scoreless outing.

After RHP Joey Donofrio (W, 2-2) logged the final two outs in the top of the fifth, the Cardinals widened the gap in the bottom of the fifth. With DH Jeremy Hazelbaker on at second and two away, Ohlman struck again with an RBI double hammered off the left field fence, plating Hazelbaker to make it 6-0. RF Nick Martini joined Ohlman on the bases with a walk, before both came racing home on a two-run double from Garcia, making it 8-0.

Donofrio kept the RockHounds off the board through his next two innings, finishing his outing with only one hit and two walks through 2.2 scoreless frames. RHP Jordan Swagerty dealt a quick 1-2-3 eighth inning, followed by a scoreless final frame from RHP Ronnie Shaban, slamming the door on the RockHounds in the dominant 8-0 win for Springfield.
