Training Camp Update
October 1, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
San Antonio Rampage News Release
As the first week of training camp wraps up, the San Antonio Rampage are ready to begin play against someone other than their teammates. After a full week of morning practices and afternoon scrimmages, the Rampage will play host to the visiting Houston Aeros on Friday, October 1 and travel to Sugar Land to complete the home-and-home series on Saturday, October 2.
Thirty-eight players were invited to camp this season, many of which should be recognizable faces to Rampage fans. Lukas Krajicek, Filip Novak, Grant McNeill, Serge Payer, Gregory Campbell, Scott Kelman, Ryan Jardine, Paul Healey, Josh Olson, Eric Beaudoin, Brent Cullaton, Petr Taticek, Victor Uchevatov, and Travis Scott have returned for another year with San Antonio.
With the NHL lockout occurring, San Antonio has received the services of the Florida Panthers' Jay Bouwmeester, Stephen Weiss, and Nathan Horton. Bouwmeester and Weiss played in limited action last year for the Rampage, but spent most of the year in Florida.
Rampage Director of Hockey Operations, Matt Loughran, expects the presence of the aforementioned among others to make, "for a better league than in the past." Loughran continued to say that the AHL is, "probably the best league in the world right now, and the eyes of the hockey world are focused upon the league."
San Antonio has played five scrimmages with the white squad taking the series from the blue squad 4-1. White has won the games by scores of 4-2, 4-1, 1-5, 6-5 in a shootout win, and 5-4 on Thursday. Campbell, Jardine, Bouwmeester and rookie Mark Wires have led the week in scoring with five points each. Healey leads the squad with four goals while Bouwmeester and Novak have a team high three assists each.
Rookies Kamil Kreps and Lou Dickenson have been impressive with four points (3-1-4) and three points (2-1-3) respectively.
Head Coach Steve Ludzik has been pleasantly surprised by the play of Dickenson and goaltender Phil Osaer. Ludzik also noted that the hard work the team is putting in now will enable, "a very young team to grow and move from B+ players to A players and help A players to become A+ players."
Friday's exhibition game versus the Aeros is free and open to the public. The puck will drop at 7 p.m. at the Ice Center at Northwoods (17530 Henderson Pass).
