Bridgeport Islanders News Release

SHELTON, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, opened their four-game 2004 preseason schedule with a 4-0 win over the Albany River Rats at the Rinks at Shelton Friday. David Cann and Alex Westlund combined to stop 30 shots for the shutout while Chris Campoli had three points in his professional debut.

Moments after Cann stopped on Albany's Ilkka Pikkarainen on a breakway, Campoli, who has earned rave reviews during the first week of training camp, re-directed a Blaine Down centering pass for a power-play goal to make it 1-0 Sound Tigers. Steve Regier also assisted on the goal, which was scored 6:59 into the first period with Campoli driving down the slot to reach the feed from Down who was on the right-wing boards.

The Sound Tigers doubled their lead to 2-0 on a similar play 5:34 into the middle frame when Barrett Heisten chipped home the rebound of a Campoli shot. Campoli took the initial shot from the right circle, and Heisten found the rebound just off the left side of the slot. Jeff Bateman also assisted on the play.

Cann was replaced by Westlund with 9:12 left in the second period after stopping all 18 shots he faced.

Down drove hard to the net and scored just before sliding into River Rats Goaltender Ari Ahonen to make it 3-0 Sound Tigers with 2:19 left in the middle frame. Ivan Curic and John Morlang assisted on the goal. Sean Bergenheim then made it 4-0 just 1:14 later off assists from Derek Edwardson and Campoli.

Campoli was the first star of the game with three points and game-high +2. Down was the second star with two points, and Cann was the third star. The Sound Tigers were 1 for 4 on the power play and 4 for 4 on the penalty kill. Albany had a 30-23 shots on goal advantage.

The Sound Tigers will play three more preseason games in Shelton hosting the Springfield Falcons this Monday at 7 p.m., the Lowell Lock Monsters this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and the Hartford Wolf Pack next Saturday, October the 9th at 7 p.m.
