FRISCO, Texas (Friday, June 5, 2015) - Mexico's best are coming to the DFW Metroplex for an unprecedented doubleheader that will crown Liga Bancomer MX and Copa MX's ultimate champions on July 20 at Toyota Stadium.
Liga MX, together with Univision Deportes, announced today that Campeón de Campeones (Champion of Champions), the emblematic Mexican championship match between the winners of the two most recent Liga MX tournaments, will be played in the Lone Star State for the first time, in what will become an annual marquee event in the United States. SuperCopa, which will decide the ultimate Copa MX champion between the last two winners, will also be played as part of the event.
The doubleheader will be played at Toyota Stadium, home of FC Dallas, in Frisco, Texas, on Monday, July 20 at 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. CT.
Tickets for the Campeón de Campeones and SuperCopa doubleheader start at $40 and are now on sale by visiting FCDallas.com.
In the first match of the night, Copa MX Clausura 2015 champions Puebla FC take on Monarcas Morelia, the former Copa MX Clausura 2014 champion, for the SuperCopa crown. Copa MX Clausura champions Puebla, led by head coach Pablo Marini has earned two Liga MX titles, five Copa MX titles and won one CONCACAF Champions League title in 1991. Morelia, which replaces Copa MX Apertura 2014 champion Santos Laguna due to the latter's participation in the Campeón de Campeones match given its most recent Liga MX Clausura 2015 championship title, is led by veteran Enrique Meza.
The soccer showcase will conclude with Campeón de Campeones, the storied Mexican championship that originated in 1942. In the first edition of the title match since 2006, Apertura 2014 champions Club América and Santos Laguna, the Clausura 2015 winners, will face off to decide the absolute champions of Liga MX.
Club America has won a record 12 Liga MX titles as well as five Copa Mexico cups and five Campeon de Campeones titles. Club América most recently won the 2014 Apertura championship and took home the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League title for a record-tying sixth time, after defeating the Montreal Impact in the CCL final. Club America is one of the most successful Mexican teams in Campeón de Campeones history with five titles (1954-1955, 1975-1976, 1987-1988, and 2004-2005), second only to CD Chivas Guadalajara, which claims seven.
The most recent LigaMX champions, Santos, one of the league's youngest teams (founded in 1983), has now lifted the Liga MX trophy five times and won one Copa MX title in 2014. Led by head coach Pedro Caixinha, Santos soundly won the 2015 Clausura title last month with decisive wins over CD Guadalajara and Queretaro.
Liga Bancomer MX and Univision Deportes have partnered with Soccer United Marketing (SUM) and FC Dallas for the management of the event. Additional details about the event, including media accreditation for the doubleheader, will be announced at a later date.
