Charleston RiverDogs News Release
ASHEVILLE, NC - Taylor Featherston went 2-4 with a homer to help pace the Asheville Tourists to a 5-2 victory over the Charleston RiverDogs in South Atlantic League action on Tuesday night at McCormick Field in Asheville.
The win puts the Tourists at 75-46 on the year (28-23 in the second half). Charleston falls to 61-56 overall (22-28).
Asheville busted out of the gates with a three run first inning and never looked back. Trevor Story led off the bottom of the first with a double. After a wild pitch by RiverDogs starter Phil Wetherell moved him to thirs, a groundout to shortstop by Sam Mende brought Story in to score and made it 1-0 Tourists. After a Featherston (2-4, HR, two runs) single, RBI double's by Jordan Ribera and Jared Simon quickly made it 3-0 in favor of the home team.
In the top of the third inning, RiverDogs second baseman Ali Castillo smacked a homerun over the left field wall to cut the Asheville lead to 3-1. The long ball was the 4th homer of the year for Castillo.
Featherston got that run right back for the Tourists with a homer of his own, his 10th of the year, in the bottom of the frame to make it 4-1 after three innings of play. An RBI double by Ryan Casteel in the fourth inning extended their lead to 5-1.
Heading to the ninth inning down four, the RiverDogs got a one out single out of Ben Gamel (2-4, double, run) to put a runner on. Two batters later Dante Bichette, Jr. singled him home to make it 5-2. But, Saxon Butler (2-4, two singles) hit into a game ending fielder's choice to send Asheville home winners.
Charleston's starter Phil Wetherell (5-7) got the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits in four innings of work. Daniel Winkler (9-10) was solid for the Tourists limiting the RiverDogs to just one run on four hits in six innings with six strikeouts to earn his first win since June 11. Dan Mahoney and Charlie Short each threw two scoreless innings of relief for Charleston.
The finale of the series will be Wednesday night at 7:05pm in Asheville. RHP Corey Black (1-0, 3.00 ERA) will start for Charleston, RHP Ben Alsup (11-5, 4.20 ERA) is set to throw for the Tourists.
