Asheville Tourists News Release
ASHEVILLE - In a game where hits were few, the Tourists strung the right ones together at the right time to win 2-1 over the Columbus Catfish in front of a huge Education Day crowd. 3,656 fans packed McCormick Field to see the Tourists pick up a series sweep over the Catfish on Tuesday afternoon.
Trailing 1-0 headed into the bottom of the eighth, Brian Lapin walked with one out and Lars Davis singled to bring up Everth Cabrera, who reached on a bunt to load the bases. Michael Mitchell would tie the game with a single and a Jeffrey Cunningham walk would give the Tourists the run they needed to take a 2-1 lead into the ninth.
Columbus scored their run in the fourth inning, when Maiko Loyola scored on a defensive error. They cruised through the majority of the game, as starter Alexander Cobb took a no-hitter into the sixth before Michael Mitchell broke it up with two outs as part of his 2-4 day at the plate. Cobb threw seven shutout innings on just one hit, walking only one and striking out six,
Asheville starter Cory Riordan threw the ball well, but did not factor in the decision. Riordan tossed seven innings of one-run baseball, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out eight Catfish hitters. Matthew Reynolds (3-0) worked a scoreless eighth inning to pick up the win, while Randall Taylor pitched the ninth for this 16th save of the season, third of the series and second in as many days.
Justin Garcia (0-4) picked up the loss in relief for the Catfish.
The Tourists will have Wednesday off before beginning a three-game set in Rome against the Braves. Connor Graham (4-3, 2.24) will get the start for the Tourists while Rome's starter is to be determined. First pitch on Thursday night will be at 7:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on the Tourists flagship station WRES-FM.
The Tourists return home for an eight-game homestand - their final homestand of the first half - on Wednesday, June 4th as they host the Hickory Crawdads on a Seniors Ear Free Wednesday, compliments of Humana. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
The Asheville Tourists are the Single-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Tickets are available by contacting the front office at (828)-258-0428 or on the website, www.theashevilletourists.com.
