Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON - The Charleston RiverDogs have placed starting pitcher Dellin Betances and right-fielder Dave Williams on the disabled list, the New York Yankees announced Tuesday. Pitcher Gabe Medina and utility outfielder D.J. Hollingsworth will fill the vacated roster spots.

Even though the RiverDogs have gotten five prominent players back from the DL over the past 10 days, Betances and Williams join Abraham Almonte, Wady Rufino and Bradley Suttle as current inactive players. Charleston has now seen ten different players go on the disabled list at some point this season.

Betances, the 13th overall rated prospect in the Yankees farm system, according to Baseball America, joins the laundry list of inactive players with an upper-body injury. The Brooklyn, N.Y. native lasted just 3.2 innings in Monday's 9-8 loss to the Augusta GreenJackets, allowing eight runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

The 6'8" right-hander was enjoying a solid first season with Charleston, posting a 4-3 record and a 4.09 ERA in 11 starts. His 64 strikeouts in 55.0 innings of work ranks third in the South Atlantic League (SAL), but he has had control issues, walking 40 batters, which is tied for most in the circuit.

Williams, the Yankees' 15th round selection in the 2007 Draft, has missed the last three games with an upper-body injury. The Rutgers has not played since May 23, when he entered the game against the Greenville Drive as a defensive replacement in the 9th inning.

The Franklin, N.J. native has appeared in 42 games (38 starts) in right field for the RiverDogs, hitting .230 with two home runs, 23 RBI and 17 runs scored.

Medina rejoins the RiverDogs for the third time this season after being transferred to the Staten Island Yankees roster on May 22. The Maracaibo, Venezuela native has registered a 0-0 record and 5.27 ERA in seven appearances this season.

Hollingsworth, a native of Tracy, Calif, enters his second stint with the RiverDogs, after spending four games in the Lowcountry in 2007. The former UC Riverside standout hit .125 (1-for-8) with two RBI with Charleston.

The Yankees' 14th round selection in 2006 spent most of last season with the Staten Island Yankees of the New-York Penn League (NYP) hitting a robust .360 in 49 games with 15 RBI, 24 runs scored and nine stolen bases.
