Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH)--All-Star lefty Brandon Durden tossed seven strong innings and enjoyed some stellar defense behind him Monday night, as the visiting Asheville Tourists nipped the Lake County Captains 4-2 at Classic Park.
Durden, a 22-year-old native of Adel, Georgia, scattered seven hits and allowed two runs over seven innings. Durden (8-2) struck out five.
The Tourists (16-15) took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run against Frank Herrmann (2-5) in the second inning on a pair of singles and Herrmann's own throwing error.
In the third, Eric Young Jr., son San Diego Padres infielder Eric Young, Sr., walked, stole second and scored on a single by Cole Garner.
Chris Gimenez homered off Durden in the fourth to make it 2-1. It was Gimenez's eighth homer of the year, and extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
Herrmann departed after striking out a career-high nine batters in 5 2/3 innings. He allowed two runs, one earned.
The Tourists extended the lead to 4-2 in the seventh with two runs off Jason Schutt. Tourists closer Andrew Johnston protected the lead in the ninth for his 11th save.
Young, who leads the league with 67 stolen bases, teamed with shortstop Chris Nelson and third baseman Phillip Cuadrado on three sensational defensive plays. Young ranged far up the middle to pick off a grounder by Mike Butia, and made a glove-hand flip to Nelson to start a double-play in the sixth. Cuadrado made a pump fake toward first on a grounder in the seventh, and threw to Nelson at third to tag out Matt Fornbasiere. Nelson made a sliding grab of a chopper and threw out Josh Noviskey in the ninth to take away a potential infield single.
The Captains (17-13) did not lose any ground in the division race as Lakewood lost 1-0 at home against Augusta. The Captains remain in second, 3 1/2 games out.
In game two of the series Tuesday night at 7:05, RHP Albert Vargas will start against Asheville's Shane Lindsay, who'll be making his first SAL start.
The homestand continues all week, with fireworks scheduled for Friday night. For tickets, call 440-954-WINS.
