Greenville Drive News Release
Salisbury, MD - Despite outhitting the Delmarva Shorebirds in their first meeting of the 2006 season, the Greenville Drive couldn't take advantage as they were defeated by the Shorebirds 5-1 Monday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. With the loss, the Drive's record fell to 20-11 in the second half and coupled with an Augusta GreenJackets win, Greenville is now five games out of first place.
The Shorebirds struck in the bottom of the first off of Michael Rozier for a run to take an early lead. After Vito Chiaravalloti reached base on a fielder's choice, Mark Fleisher doubled him home with a shot down the leftfield line.
With another run in the bottom of the second, Delmarva extended their lead to 2-0. Rozier walked Quincy Ascencion to leadoff the inning who promptly stole second. A fielder's choice by Jarod Rine allowed him to advance to third before Kyle Dahlberg singled, plating Ascencion.
After being held scoreless through the first four innings, the Drive finally broke through for their only run in the top of the fifth. Tony Granadillo hit a one-out single and scored when the next batter, Christian Lara, doubled to down the leftfield line.
Delmarva regained a two-run lead when they scored once in the bottom of the sixth. With one-out and runners on first and second, Ascencion collected his second RBI with a single up the middle, knocking in Chiaravalloti.
Chiaravalloti put the game away in the bottom of the seventh with two-run blast, his third of the season, with two outs.
With the loss, Rozier fell to 4-4 on the season, and has not earned a victory in over a month and a half, dating back to June 10th. Ismael Casillas tossed the final 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits, while striking out three.
The Drive and Shorebirds continue their four game series Tuesday night at Perdue Stadium with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Michael Bowden will toe the rubber for Greenville as Delmarva counters with righty Chorye Spoone.
The Greenville Drive return home on Wednesday, August 2nd when they begin an eight-game home stand, starting with the Lake County Captains. Game time is set for 5:05 PM
