Rome Emperors News Release
Rome, GA - The Rome Braves used a combination of timely hitting and stellar pitching to defeat the Greensboro Grasshoppers 8-2 in front of 2,845 fans at State Mutual Stadium.
The Braves wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first as Robert Marcial drew a walk and right fielder Jamie Romak continued his torrid second half by smashing his twelfth home run of the season giving the Braves the early lead 2-0. The Braves continued their offensive onslaught in the bottom of the fifth as Jordan Schafer reached on a bunt single and was followed by a ground rule double by Derrick Arnold putting runners on second and third. Quentin Davis would then deliver a one out single plating Schafer and second baseman Robert Marcial would execute a perfect safety squeeze scoring Arnold making the score 4-0. Cody Clark would conclude the scoring in the inning as he blooped a RBI singled into center, which allowed Davis to race home giving the Braves a 5-0 lead.
The Grasshoppers would get on the board in the top of the fifth on back to back doubles by James Guerrero and Gary Roche cutting the deficit to 5-1, but the Braves offense continued to roll as they scored two runs in the sixth highlighted by a Davis two RBI triple and a single run in the seventh on an RBI double by Josh Morris giving the Braves the 8-1 lead. Greensboro would score a single run in the ninth but Rome would hold on for the victory 8-2.
Rome starter Tyler Bullock (7-4) was brilliant as he tossed six innings, scattered six hits, and struck out five en route to the victory. Greensboro starter Aaron Thompson (6-6) did not fare as well as he went five innings and allowed five earned runs. Beau Jones picked up his first save of the season as he pitched the final three innings and only allowed one earned run.
Rome and Greensboro will play game two of the series tomorrow night at 7pm at State Mutual Stadium. For ticket information call 706-378-5144 or log on to www.romebraves.com.
