CHARLESTON, SC - West Virginia scored an unearned run in the first inning and added a sacrifice fly in the third to defeat Charleston, 2-0, in a rain-shortened, five-inning South Atlantic League game Monday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

With the victory, the Power improve to 14-16 in the season's second half and 53-46 overall while the RiverDogs, who dropped their fifth straight, fall to 13-17 in the second half and 51-50 overall.

The five-inning contest lasted 1:28 when the umpires halted the game due to rain and heavy lightning in the Charleston area. There was a delay of 1:15 before the umpires decided to cancel the remainder of the game.

Power starter Dave Welch (3-6) was credited with a complete-game shutout, as he allowed only three hits and twice stranded runners at second and third base in an inning.

In West Virginia's opening inning, Darren Ford led off with a base on balls from RiverDogs starter Wilkins Arias (6-6). Ford moved to second on Lorenzo Cain's single to left field and scored when Estee Harris booted the ball for a two-base error.

In the third inning, Ford again drew a leadoff walk and promptly stole second base. Cain then reached on an infield single, moving Ford to third base. Ford scored on Angel Salome's sacrifice fly to right field.

Cain led West Virginia's attack by going 2-2, while Ford and Ned Yost each collected a hit for the Power. Tim Battle, Marcos Vechionacci and Eduardo Nunez each had a knock for Charleston.

Arias pitched five complete innings and struck out six batters while walking two. Welch also pitched five frames and fanned five while walking one.

Game 2 of this four-game series is set for Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. with Charleston sending righty Erick Abreu (3-1, 2.66 ERA) to the hill while West Virginia counters with southpaw Steve Garrison (4-3, 3.10 ERA).
