Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

ASHVILLE, NC - The sweep was not to be as the Asheville Tourists potent lineup woke up and scored eight runs on their way to a 9-3 victory against the Lakewood BlueClaws on Saturday night. The loss ends the BlueClaws three game winning streak

The big storylines were the unreliable defense by the BlueClaws and the strong pitching by Tourists (17-11) starter Juan Nicasio. The BlueClaws finished the game with two errors and a misplayed ball on top of that and Nicasio (5-1) went 6.2 innings, allowing just two runs. He did not allow a hit until the fifth inning.

The Tourists put together two big innings against starter Heitor Correa and the BlueClaws (16-13). In the bottom of the first, Scott Robinson led the game off with a single before a stolen base and a ground out move him to third. A walk by Delta Cleary put two runners on and a sacrifice fly brought Robinson home. Cleary then scored as outfielders Anthony Gose and D'Arby Myers let a ball fall between them and it was suddenly 2-0.

The Tourists added four runs off Correa (7-4) in the third as Robinson again led things off with a hit, this time a double. Cleary singled and Robinson then scored as Jim Murphy made an error. A walk and two more singles were surrendered by Correa who allowed the lead to balloon to 6-0. The Tourists had not led all series but, now were in complete control with Nicasio on the mound.

Correa made it through six innings but took the loss. He allowed nine hits and six runs; however, only three were earned.

The BlueClaws struck in the fourth as Gose walked, reached second on a wild pitch, went to third on a groundball and scored on a wild pitch and then made the game a bit closer in the top of the seventh. In the seventh, Jim Murphy walked and Travis Mattair doubled, the BlueClaws then scored on an RBI- groundout and a single by Kyle Lafrenz to make it 6-3 but the Tourists struck back in the bottom of the inning.

Rob Roth came on in the bottom of the seventh and allowed two runs to erase what the BlueClaws had done in their previous at-bats and keep the advantage at five runs. Jared Simon worked the ninth and allowed a run as well.

Travis d'Arnaud did not get a hit and ended his 15- game hitting streak.

The BlueClaws won the series with the Tourists three games to one and will travel a short distance to Greenville for a four-game series with the Drive (Red Sox). The series will begin on Sunday at 7:00 pm as the BlueClaws will send Trevor May (1-1), who has been pitching very well of late, to the mound and he will be opposed by Fabian Washington (6-2).
