Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, N.C. - 2B Mike Hollander lifted the Hickory Crawdads to the 10-9 walk-off win against the Rome Braves with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning, before 2,179 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Saturday night. Hollander finished the game 2-for-5 with three RBIs.
The Braves (11-18, 46-53) took an early lead with a run in the top of the first inning against RHP Carlos Pimentel. With two outs and a runner on third base, Pimentel misfired with a wild pitch that plated the game's first run.
Hickory (16-12, 49-48) erased the narrow deficit with a big six-run inning in the bottom of the second against RHP Yeliar Castro. 1B Jared Bolden sparked the rally with a leadoff single and moved to second when RF Miguel Alfonzo was hit by a pitch. 3B Matt West then drew a walk to load the bases, before Hollander unloaded them with a two-run single, scoring Bolden and Alfonzo. West then came in from third base on a wild pitch during the at-bat of C Leonel De Los Santos, who then belted a ball over the left field wall for a two-run homer, making it 5-1. CF David Paisano got on board next with a walk and SS Andres James brought him in with an RBI double, capping the six-run inning.
Rome began chipping away at the deficit with a pair of runs (only one earned) against Pimentel in the third inning, and then scored three against RHP Mark Hamburger in the fourth and fifth to tie the game, 6-6.
LHP Yoon-Hee Nam took over on the mound for the Crawdads to start the sixth inning, which he navigated through in scoreless fashion. However, the Braves struck for two runs against Nam on LF Adam Milligan's second homer of the game to take an 8-6 lead in the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Crawdads again came racing back. DH Erik Morrison led off the frame with his 17th homer of the season, a solo shot hit well over the left field wall. LF Cristian Santana then double to left field and Bolden followed with a single, which led to a throwing error after the throw from the outfield was cut off, trying to get Bolden at second base. The errant throw sailed into right-center field and enabled Santana and Bolden to score, putting the Crawdads back in the lead, 9-8.
The Braves tied the game again in the top of the eighth inning against RHP Joe Wieland, when 2B Joel Campusano hit a solo shot to right field. Wieland got out of the rest of the inning in scoreless fashion, before RHP Fabio Castillo dealt a three-up-three-down top of the ninth, sending the game to the bottom of the ninth with the 9-9 tie intact.
Bolden again sparked the rally in the ninth against LHP Clayton McMillan (1-1), lining a one-out single to right field for his third hit of the game. Alfonzo quickly followed with base hit to left, putting runners on at first and second. RHP Tyrelle Harris took over on the mound and was able to retire 3B Matt West for the second out. After working a full count and fouling numerous pitches off, Hollander lined one up the middle for a walk-off single, bringing Bolden in from second base and winning the game for the Crawdads, 10-9. Castillo earned the win for the Crawdads, while McMillan was tagged with the loss for the Braves.
