Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Kannapolis, NC - With brooms in sight, the Augusta GreenJackets pounded out 18 hits in an 11-4 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators on Saturday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium to avoid a four-game sweep.
With the game knotted at four in the fourth inning, the GreenJackets took the lead for good on Josh Mazzola's RBI single followed by Andy D'Alessio's run-scoring double to put Augusta up by two. The Jackets would add to their lead with single runs in the fifth and seventh and a three-run outburst in the eighth that included RBI hits from Johnny Monell and Ehire Adrianza.
Mike Loree and the GreenJackets pitching staff tightened their belts after some early troubles. Kannapolis didn't notch a hit after Kyle Shelton's game-tying single in third inning that knotted the game at four. Loree (7-6) fired six innings and allowed four runs - two earned - on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Ryan Verdugo and Edwin Quirarte slammed the door shut out of the bullpen with three scoreless innings. Verdugo struck out four in his two-inning stint.
Augusta scored first in what threatened to be a see-saw battle like the ones that preceded it in this series. Mike Loberg doubled in the first run of the game and scored on Adrianza's single. Kannapolis answered with a run in the second before Loberg added two more to the lead in the third with his second double of the game.
The Intimidators tied the game in the third thanks to two GreenJackets errors and three hits, with Shelton's single tying the score, but would get no closer thanks to the masterful pitching of the Jackets.
Kevin Asselin (2-3) takes the loss for the Intimidators, firing three innings of three-run relief on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
Augusta will tangle for four games with the Hickory Crawdads beginning on Sunday afternoon, sending area product Aaron King (4-5, 3.95) to the mound near his hometown of Newton, North Carolina to oppose Wilmer Font (6-2, 3.41). First pitch from L.P. Frans Stadium against the Crawdads is 3:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets return home for a nine-game homestand spread across ten days, starting on July 30th against the Greenville Drive. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
