
Tortugas Drop Road Trip Opener 10-3 in Lakeland

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - Lakeland took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth and scored five more times to blow the game open on Monday night at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium. The Flying Tigers scored two batters into the game and led the rest of the way.
Luke Burch led off the bottom of the first with a double off RHP Tejay Antone, stole second, and came into score the first run on a Chad Sedio single.
In the second, Antone surrendered a lead-off single to Andres Sthormes and a one-out bunt single to Burch before AJ Simcox drove both runners in with a two-out double.
John Sansone led off the top of the third with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, third on a double play, and scored the Tortugas first run on a wild pitch from RHP Anthony Castro. After Bruce Yari and Tyler Stephenson drew back-to-back two-out walks, Courtney Hawkins drove in Yari with a double to cut the deficit to 3-2.
A two-out Derek Hill triple, scoring Herlis Rodriguez and Dylan Burdeaux, in the bottom of the third but Lakeland back up 5-2.
The Flying TIgers put the game out of reach in their half of the eighth. A hit batter, a walk, and a bunt single loaded up the bases against Hunter without an out. Hunter then hit Sedio to force in a run, and walked SImcox to let in another and make it a 7-2 game. Back-to-back sacrifice flies from Daniel Pinero and Jose Azocar put Lakeland up 9-2. With two-away and a runner on first, Rodriguez reached on a single, advancing Simcox to third. Simcox would score after reaching third on an Ibandel Isabel throwing error.
Brantley Bell scored on a Alfredo Rodriguez sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth to round out the scoring at 10-3.
Castro (7-3) earned the win. He went five, allowed five hits, two runs and three walks with five strikeouts. Antone (3-3) takes the loss. He allowed five runs on ten hits in five innings with two walks and three strikeouts.
LHP Wennington Romero (8-7, 4.18) will get the ball for the Tortugas on Tuesday. Lakeland will counter with Michael Fulmer, who will make a rehab start.
First pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 6:30 PM with coverage beginning at 6:15 PM with the Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
NOTES: The Tortugas fall to 0-36 when trailing after 8 innings... After winning the first five against Lakeland, the Flying TIgers have won two straight... RHP Brian Hunter has made two appearances since being called up from Dayton, he has allowed 5 hits, 4 walks, and 8 runs (7er) in 2 1/3 innings with 3 strikeouts. He has also hit 2 batters... RHP Aaron Fossas tossed 2-scoreless innings, his first scoreless appearance since 7/21. He had allowed a run in 6-straight prior to tonight... Randy Ventura's 11-game hit streak came to an end, but he extended his on-base streak to 27-straight games after getting hit by a pitch in the fourth... Ibandel Isabel extended his hitting streak to 10 games. He is 17-for-41 (.415) during that span... Michael Beltre finished 2-for-3 with a double and a triple, his first multi-extra base hit game since 5/18. He now has 9 multi-hit games... Courtney Hawkins became the 54th different Tortuga and the 29th different position player. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in his debut.
