Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Bailey Falter struck out eight in six strong innings, as the Clearwater Threshers knocked off the Bradenton Marauders by a 3-1 final on Monday night to extend their division lead in the Florida State League North.
Clearwater (32-18) (64-54) now sits 2.5 games up on the Dunedin Blue Jays, and remains four games ahead of the Lakeland Flying Tigers, with just 19 remaining in the regular season.
Wilson Ramos finished 1-for-3 with a single and a run scored in his third rehab game for Clearwater, as the catcher works his way to Philadelphia. Ramos was placed on the Tampa Bay Rays disabled list on July 17, and was dealt to Philadelphia at the deadline in exchange for a player to be named later.
Falter (7-4) pounded the strike zone through six strong innings, holding the Marauders to just a run on six hits. Falter did not issue a walk and racked up eight strikeouts - five of them looking - while throwing 77% of his offerings for strikes (68-of-88).
Bradenton (15-32) (50-62) broke ahead in the second, after Mitchell Tolmann led off with a double and advanced to second on a Casey Hughston sacrifice bunt.
Falter got a big strikeout of John Bormann, but Brett Pope grounded a single up the middle to push across the night's first run.
Kyle Martin brought it back even in the third. On a 3-1 pitch from Mike Wallace (4-10), Martin sent a moonshot out to the berm beyond the right field fence, knotting the game up at one on his fourth home run for Clearwater.
The Threshers rallied to take the lead in the fourth. Ramos lined a single to right just out of the reach of a diving Casey Hughston, and Henri Lartigue followed by drawing a four-pitch walk. With two down, Daniel Brito ripped a triple to center field to plate two runs and put the Threshers on top, 3-1.
The bullpen handled it the rest of the way, as Trevor Bettencourt hurled two scoreless innings, and Addison Russ worked around a single a walk to lock down his 11th save for Clearwater in as many tries.
The Threshers will battle the Marauders in game two of the four-game set on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Jerad Eickhoff will make his third rehab start for the Threshers, while Evan Piechota takes the hill for Bradenton. The game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 6:45 p.m.
