Austin, TX March 27, 2011 - The Austin Toros defeated the Idaho Stampede 117-108 Sunday night at Cedar Park Center, splitting the weekend series. The Stampede's Luke Babbitt led all scorers with 34 points and four rebounds.
The first quarter saw six lead changes and five ties. The Stampede, shooting 42 percent from the field compared to the Toros 43 percent, managed to take the lead at the end of the first and carried their lead into the second. The Toros responded to the Stampede's lead with an Aubrey Coleman jump shot to tie the game and a Michael Joiner 3-pointer to capture the lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter. The Toros went on a 17-6 run in the second, stretching their lead to 12 points. The Toros led the Stampede 61-53 at the half.
The Toros held their lead throughout the third quarter, improving their shooting percentage to 51 percent from the field and 83 percent from the free throw line. With less than 1 minute left in the third, the Toros took the biggest lead of the game of 16 points thanks to a Kevin Palmer lay-up and three consecutive made free throws. The Stampede caught fire in the fourth, cutting the Toros lead down to 3 points with combined efforts from Tony Bobbitt and Luke Babbitt. Luke Babbitt scored a three-pointer for the Stampede bringing the game to a tie with 6:15 on the clock. The Toros swiftly recaptured the lead with two free throws by Kyle Weaver. The Toros lead proved to be insurmountable for the Stampede as the Toros went on an 8-4 run in the closing minutes of the game.
Carldell "Squeaky" Johnson and Kevin Palmer led the Toros in scoring contributing 21 points each. Kyle Weaver followed Johnson and Palmer with 18 points. Babbitt was followed by Tony Bobbitt (33) and Antoine Walker (10) in scoring for the Stampede.
The Austin Toros (21-26) travel to Reno to play the Bighorns on Tuesday. The Idaho Stampede (22-26) will play the Utah Flash Friday, April 1 at Idaho.
