Toros Provide Home Crowd With Overtime Win

Austin, TX February 28- Behind their ability to connect on shots from beyond the arc (11-28) the Austin Toros defeated the Springfield Armor Sunday at the Austin Convention Center, 111-108.

Tied after the first quarter at 21, the Armor were able to pull away early in the second. Their six point lead quickly deteriorated behind back-to-back long shots from Luke Bonner and Curtis Jerrells, giving the Toros a 30-29 advantage. Squeaky Johnson's missed shot with :03 left on the clock resulted in a shot clock violation buzzer. Armor's Abdulai Jalloh rebounded Johnson's shot and traveled after thinking the buzzer was the halftime buzzer. The Toros took a timeout to draw up a play that was successful, with Dwayne Jones making a hook shot at the buzzer that put the Toros up 47-40.

The Toros began to pull away in the third quarter and held a 15 point lead at the end of the quarter, 77-62. They were able to outscore the Jam 30-22 behind Alonzo Gee's nine points and Jerrells' six assists. However the lead didn't last long.

Determined to provide an upset, the Armor came out full of energy in the fourth quarter scoring the first eight points of the quarter. With 3:44 left in the game, Justin Hawkins (36 points, 6 rebounds) tied the game at 90 after a long basket. Hawkins and Gee were both unsuccessful in their last team possession, sending the game in to overtime at 100 points apiece.

The Toros were up by five with 1:44 left in overtime, but the Armor fought back to close the gap, coming within one after Kentrell Gransberry's layup. With one second left on the clock Gransberry sent Gee to the line where he made both freebies, to put the Toros up by three. Tre Whitted attempted a half-court shot at the buzzer but it was too short.

Armor's Donte Milligan contributed a double-double with 14 points and 13 boards. Two other Springfield players scored in double figures: Tony Bobbitt (16) and Kyle McAlarney (12).

adidas player of the game Dwayne Jones had 24 points and 18 rebounds. Gee led the Toros in points (26) and added eight rebounds. Three other Toros players scored in double figures: Jerrells (21), Basden (14), and Johnson (10).

The Toros (22-12) return to action Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. when they host the Tulsa 66ers. The Armor (5-27) will head back to Massachusetts Monday where they will face off against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers at 8:30 p.m. EST.
