Reno Bighorns News Release
RENO, Nev.- Mustafa Shakur's basket with less than two seconds remaining in the fourth quarter pushed the Tulsa 66ers to a dramatic 96-94 victory over the Reno Bighorns Friday night in the Reno Events Center.
Reno (16-19) trailed by two with 15 seconds remaining in the game, until Will Blalock drove to the goal, was fouled and connected on a runner. Blalock's free-throw try missed, however, leaving the game knotted at 94.
On the ensuing possession, Shakur knocked down a jumper that put the 66ers (19-14) ahead by two with just more than one second remaining on the clock. Following a timeout, Blalock's inbounds pass caromed off the backboard and rim, and Rod Benson's attempt to tip it home went unsuccessful, pushing Tulsa to the slim victory.
The Bighorns played catch-up for most of the night, trailing by seven at the break and by 11 through three quarters. Reno fired back in the fourth period, finally forcing a tie with 31 seconds left. The effort would fall just short, though, in the first of back-to-back matchups between the two teams.
Benson led the way for Reno with a double-double, collecting 19 points and 13 rebounds. Desmon Farmer paced the Bighorns scoring attack with 24 points, helped by a 12-for-14 night from the stripe. Reno shot just 38.8 percent from the field and connected on just 2-of-18 tries from beyond the arc.
Shakur scored a game-high 26 for Tulsa, while Deron Washington and Larry Owens each chipped in 19. Owens finished with 11 boards, and Chris Richard recorded 10 rebounds.
The two teams will hook-up again on Sunday afternoon from the Reno Events Center. Tip-time is set for 3 p.m., and Sunday is another Family Feast Day with the Bighorns, as hot dogs will be available for just $1. Tickets are on-sale now at www.RenoBighorns.com, the Reno Events Center Box Office, Silver Legacy Box Office, or by visiting any Northern Nevada Ticketmaster location or Web site.
