AUSTIN, TX - Ian Mahinmi scored 25 points and the Austin Toros defeated the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 112-105 in overtime on Friday night at the Austin Convention Center. Austin withstood a furious comeback attempt by Rio Grande Valley and defeated the Vipers for the second time in two nights.
The Vipers battled back from a 23 point third quarter deficit and led 99-97 following Sergio Sanchez's 3-point basket to put the Vipers ahead with only 16 seconds left to play in the game. Austin would answer with a slam-dunk by Mahinmi with five seconds remaining in the fourth to force the extra period.
Austin would outscore Rio Grande 13-6 in the final period and improve to 3-2 in overtime this season and record their franchise record 18th win at home.
Mahinmi, who is on assignment from the San Antonio Spurs, also collected 16 rebounds and blocked five shots. Marcus Williams added a double-double with 19 points and 17 rebounds and dished out five assists. Andre Barrett scored a season-high 25 points and DerMarr Johnson added 14.
Rio Grande Valley was led in scoring by Desmon Farmer, who had 27 points and six assists for the Vipers (16-28). Ivan Johnson added 17 points and Trent Strickland had 15. Johnson also had 14 rebounds.
The Toros improved to 27-15 on the season and remain in first place in the Southwest Division.
The Toros play next Wednesday at Anaheim, the first game of a three game road trip to California. Rio Grande Valley heads home to face the Tulsa 66ers on Monday to open a six-game homestand to close out the regular season.
