Indiana Mad Ants News Release
The NBA D-League's Fort Wayne Mad Ants have acquired former NBA and Duke standout Dahntay Jones, a 6'6" power forward who was recently waived from the Sacramento Kings. Jones will be playing his first games with the Ants this weekend against the Dakota Wizards.
"This is a big pickup for the Mad Ants. Whenever you can add a player of Dahntay's experience, explosiveness, and character, it will do nothing but lift your club," said Mad Ants President Jeff Potter. "Dahntay will be a big part of the Mad Ants trying to finish strong in our expansion season."
Dahntay Jones was selected by the Boston Celtics in the first round (20th pick) of the 2003 NBA Draft. He was then traded to the Memphis Grizzlies where he signed a four year contract. During his four seasons with the Grizzlies, Jones averaged 5.1 points per game including a career high 26 points on March 27th, 2007, against the Utah Jazz. Jones spent the 2007 pre-season with the Boston Celtics and was moved to the Sacramento Kings where he played in 25 games and averaged 3.2 points per game before being waived on February 16th, 2008.
Jones played the first two seasons of his collegiate career at Rutgers University where he averaged 13.5 points per game and was named to the BEC All-Rookie team in 1999. He finished his career at Duke University where he averaged 18 points and 5 rebounds per game his senior season. While at Duke he helped the team to win two ACC tournaments and advance to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 during the 2002 and 2003 seasons.
To make room for Jones, the Mad Ants released shooting Guard Rob Griffin. Griffin joined the Mad Ants on February 28. He averaged 9.7 points per game for the Mad Ants.
In another roster change for the Ants, the Detroit Pistons have recalled 7'1" center Cheikh Samb. Samb played in 19 games this season for the Mad Ants and averaged 10.9 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 4 blocks per game. Samb set a D-league record with 11 blocks on February 1st against the Sioux Falls Skyforce. Samb has played in 2 games this season for the Pistons, averaging 1.5 points and 2 rebounds per game.
